How to Stop Notifying Everyone When Updating Your LinkedIn

Do you know that every time you make a change on LinkedIn, your connections get an update of your tweaks?

Do you know that every time you make a change on LinkedIn, your connections get an update of your tweaks? If you don't want your every move watched by your network, turn the notifications off. After all, not only do you want to avoid spamming your LinkedIn friends every time you change your profile picture, but you might also want to keep the timing of the changes private. Here's how to turn the notifications off:

  1. Log into your LinkedIn account.
  2. Hover over your name on the upper-right corner of your page, and a dropdown menu should appear. Click on the settings option.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page, go to the privacy controls section, and click "Turn on/off your activity broadcasts." You'll see a small pop-up that will let you check or uncheck a box that gives people updates. Uncheck the box, and save your changes.

7 Cool Lesser-Known Subreddits To Bookmark

We've all heard of the popular Reddit subsections like AskReddit or IAMA, where each has well over a million subscribers.

We've all heard of the popular Reddit subsections like AskReddit or IAMA, where each has well over a million subscribers. But there are plenty of awesome less-famous subreddits that deserve more credit. Here are a few of them:

Chemicalreactiongifs: If you're looking for a cool way to kill time, this subreddit is the perfect way to while away minutes. You don't need a chemistry background to enjoy the gifs and videos of the coolest chemical reactions. Gaze in awe when you watch a close-up of a kernel of corn popping in slow motion or find out what happens when lava interacts with ice.

SubredditDrama: This is where all the Gossip Girl-like action happens on Reddit. If you're looking for some dirt on "abusive moderators, internet fights and other dramatic happenings from other subreddits," this subsection is for you.

FindaReddit: Looking for a subreddit that suits your needs? Just post your request in FindaReddit and readers will suggest subsections that may apply. For example, if you're looking for a special reddit for studying or one that will give you gift-buying advice, just post in FindaReddit and there is usually commenter who'll offer some suggestions.

5 Tips to Make the Most of LinkedIn's New Makeover

If you haven't logged on to your LinkedIn account in a while, you're in for a treat.

If you haven't logged on to your LinkedIn account in a while, you're in for a treat. The social media network for working professionals has undergone an extreme makeover, and the latest version looks more sleek and visually appealing than ever before.

Obviously, a new look means the playing field has changed for LinkedIn users. To find out how we can use the upgrade to our advantage, we talked to Krista Canfield, senior manager of corporate communications at LinkedIn, for some insider tips:

  • Add a photo. It's important to add a picture to your profile as it is more of a focal point with the new design. Your profile is seven times more likely to be viewed if you have a photo, according to Canfield.
  • Include your skills. The latest generation of LinkedIn makes your skills and other accomplishments more eye-catching and organized. Add skills that are relevant so you will stand out, says Canfield. "You can add up to 50 LinkedIn Skills, everything from classical ballet to bloodstain pattern analysis." Your peers can also now endorse you for specific skills.
  • Share your thoughts. If you happen to come across an interesting article, share it with your contacts. The activity feed is now on the top of your profile, so it's more important than ever to share interesting status updates and links. In fact, those who share an article on LinkedIn at least once a week are "nearly 10 times more likely to be contacted by a recruiter for new opportunities" than those who don't. But remember to think "quality over quantity" when you're updating your status or sharing an article, because it will be a reflection of your professional self.

Can Reddit Users Create a Hit Song?

Can the power of Reddit translate to Billboard success?

Can the power of Reddit translate to Billboard success? A group of Redditors are trying to churn out the next hit pop song, and updates on their progress can be viewed on Reddit Top of the Pops, a new subreddit created for the purposes of collaborating on a chart-worthy song.

The project was first inspired by a random musing on the subreddit AskReddit, where user Indubitable_Smoo said after spending a whole week "listening to an urban music radio station, which plays generic music that all sounds the same," he or she concluded that Reddit users could easily come up with a generic hit song. The overwhelming response prompted Indubitable_Smoo to start Reddit Top of the Pops.

Soon after its creation, the thread was buzzing with activity and various singers, producers, and songwriters started offering their services. One commenter claimed to work for a legitimate online radio station and said he "might be able to get [the station] to play the finished product."

The moderators have designed a master plan of execution and have currently completed the first step — holding a vote on the best sound track out of 14 submissions. Here's what the winner, entitled "Generic Pop Instrumental," sounds like:

Other tasks on their to-do list includes finding lyricists and singers, making a music video, and figuring out a way to collect and distribute royalties.

What do you think — does the track have the makings of the next hottest pop song?

So You Wanna Drop Your T-Mobile Contract?

Turns out I'm not the only one who is worried about the AT&T and T-Mobile merger.

Turns out I'm not the only one who is worried about the AT&T and T-Mobile merger. About 71 percent of you said in a recent poll that you had concerns, and many of you chimed in with your misgivings. Here's what some of you said:

  • "I left AT&T quite a while back thanks to their horrible service (customer and tech both) to move to T-Mobile, and have never regretted it. Until this week. Now I guess I need to look at Verizon." —
  • I have been with T-Mobile for many years. Whenever I have tried another carrier I have always been disappointed and end up coming back to TM. Not even the iPhone managed to make me stray and so I am really scared to see how this merger is going to affect the quality of service I have come to expect with TM." —

I'm right there with you readers. My worries for how this move will affect the quality of my wireless carrier got me thinking about whether I can switch out of T-Mobile before the merger takes effect. According to an article from Forbes, it still isn't clear if T-Mobile customers will be charged a termination penalty if they decide to leave the carrier before their contract is up. But something you might be relieved to find out is that it's illegal to change the terms of any prior contract with T-Mobile even after the firm joins AT&T. If you find a "materially adverse" change, such as a price increase, you can dispute that with the carrier and perhaps even break your contract without paying any fees.

The merger won't go into effect until a year later and I'm pretty glad that my contract ends January next year. Hmmm, is it just me or does the iPhone from Verizon look quite tempting all of a sudden?

Are You Worried About the AT&T and T-Mobile Merger?

I have to admit that I wasn't too thrilled to hear the news of the AT&T and T-Mobile merger.

I have to admit that I wasn't too thrilled to hear the news of the AT&T and T-Mobile merger. I've been a steadfast T-Mobile customer for eight years and actively avoid AT&T plans because of my not-so-positive experiences with its customer service. It seems that it's too early to predict what this corporate move means for customers, but a ton of questions run through my mind — would T-Mobile's low-cost plans be dropped? Would the merger improve or worsen the quality of customer service?

These are just some of the issues that I'm thinking about, and I'm wondering if you share the same worries. Are you concerned about the AT&T and T-Mobile merger?

Half a Million People Protest Rising Gas Prices on Facebook

As a solution for the rising gas prices, people are taking to social media outlets to stage their protest, says The Consumerist.

As a solution for the rising gas prices, people are taking to social media outlets to stage their protest, says The Consumerist. In fact, they are encouraging people to not fill their tanks today. We've been lamenting over the increasing cost of gas and came up tips to slash your bill and techie tools to find cheap gas, but it appears some people are being more proactive and are trying to make themselves heard by organizing a boycott on Facebook.

Their efforts seem to be pretty successful, the Gas Strike Facebook event, has more than half a million users who RSVP-ed. But it might not make a difference. The one-day gas strike will more likely hurt local gas station owners, rather than lower the price of a barrel of oil, says Economist Robert Salvino at Coastal Carolina University.

Will you be joining in the protest?

JC Penney Tries to Outsmart Google Search Results

In a recent exposé by the New York Times, JC Penney was found to have been sneakily juicing up Google search results.

In a recent exposé by the New York Times, JC Penney was found to have been sneakily juicing up Google search results. For months during the holiday season, the retail giant has been first for keyword searches “skinny jeans,” “home decor,” “comforter sets,” “furniture,” “tablecloths,” and more. From the basic to the highly specific keywords, the retail chain had almost a monopoly on a large amount of Google search results, which translates into a greater number of online sales.

One of the main contributing factors to come up high in searches is to have web pages link to your website. There were apparently many spam pages that linked back to JC Penney, some of which didn't have anything else up on their sites other than the links. This is a big no-no in the Google books, and the tech firm has subsequently manually reduced JC Penney's rankings. This means that the retailer will no longer be coming up as high as they used to, which may mean a smaller market share of the ecommerce industry.

Lesson to be learned: don't try to be sneaky with Google or you'll be banished to the back pages of no return.
