Poll Finds That Americans Aren't For Single Motherhood

People say they are all for modern families, but conservative opinions surface when it comes to single motherhood.

People say they are all for modern families, but conservative opinions surface when it comes to single motherhood. While women have long raised children on their own (by choice or as a result of circumstance), a recent poll by the Pew Research Center shows that single motherhood doesn't have the popular vote. According to a Washington Post report, although nearly four in 10 births are to unmarried women, society still believes children need two parents. It said:

The third group tended to accept all the changes except for single motherhood. Virtually all of them said the growing prevalence of mothers without male partners to help them raise children is bad for society. This group tended to be young, Democratic or independent, and more heavily minority.

Fair For Fertile Couples to Do It Anywhere When Trying to Conceive?

Julia and Joel get busy in Adam and Kristina's bathroom on last night's episode of Parenthood!

Julia and Joel get busy in Adam and Kristina's bathroom on last night's episode of Parenthood! When the youngest Braverman sister realizes she's ovulating during Max's chaotic birthday party, she and her husband sneak upstairs to take advantage of the fertile time frame. Since the couple has been trying to conceive a second child for months, Kristina is amused rather than offended when she accidentally walks in on them (and offers them the bed). What's your opinion of this behavior?

When Can a Child Let Go of Mom's Hand While Crossing the Street?

Crossing the street on one's own is a major milestone.

Crossing the street on one's own is a major milestone. But before children ever set out on the pedestrian path alone, a parent has to loosen their grip. At some point, mom or dad decides a tot is mature enough to walk next to them rather than hand in hand. The decision to take this step often comes with an incredible trust that the youngster will listen to directions and won't dart out into traffic. When did you allow your kiddo to do this?

Billy Ray Cyrus Tells GQ He Made a Mistake With Daughter Miley

Can a parent admit to making a child rearing mistake without insulting their offspring?

Can a parent admit to making a child rearing mistake without insulting their offspring? In a somewhat emotional interview with GQ, Billy Ray Cyrus talked about where things went wrong in his relationship with his daughter Miley, 18. He said:

"How many interviews did I give and say, 'You know what's important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids'? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, 'You don't need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.' Well, I'm the first guy to say to them right now: You were right. I should have been a better parent. I should have said, 'Enough is enough—it's getting dangerous and somebody's going to get hurt.' I should have, but I didn't. Honestly, I didn't know the ball was out of bounds until it was way up in the stands somewhere."

While Cyrus's sentiment isn't an uncommon one, do you think it was a fatherly thing to say considering that Miley lives in the public eye?

That's the idea behind the cynical albeit funny confections made by the Bitter Baking Company which helps deliver tough messages in a candy coated way. Each iced sugar cookie is topped with a candid thought made from edible ink and paper. The sweets are sold in packs of six for $18. And, the baked goods help families tackle all the difficult topics; from breaking paternity news — "I stopped taking my birth control last week" and "You are not the father" — to extending pregnancy congrats — "I'm excited that your pregnancy will finally let me see what you look like fat" and
"You have the cutest baby I have ever seen...until I have one." There's even a cookie that helps a dad cope with undergoing a vasectomy it reads, "Stop crying, your wife pushed kids out of her vagina."

How Late Do You Stay Out on Date Night?

Tonight's the night .

Tonight's the night . . . well maybe! When you and your partner get the green light for some kid-free time out on the town, how long do you last? While some couples try to party it up like they did in their prebaby days, others are more conservative with their outings. During a recent date night twitter chat, @npjohnson tweeted, "11ish. Tad past my bedtime to make it feel special." What do you do?

Would You Use Laughing Gas During Labor?

Most women need something to take the edge off during labor and there are lots of options with the epidural being fairly common.

Most women need something to take the edge off during labor and there are lots of options with the epidural being fairly common. But now, moms-to-be will likely have another choice — laughing gas. One report said:

The use of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, during childbirth fell out of favor in the United States decades ago, and just two hospitals — one in San Francisco and one in Seattle — still offer it. But interest in returning the dentist office staple to the delivery room is growing: respected hospitals including Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center plan to start offering it, the federal government is reviewing it, and after a long hiatus, the equipment needed to administer it is expected to hit the market soon.

Would you consider using it?

5 Ways to Save the Candid Things Your Children Say

Incredible things come out of the mouths of babes, but it's hard to keep track of all the tidbits your tot says — especially if you are mother to many.

Incredible things come out of the mouths of babes, but it's hard to keep track of all the tidbits your tot says — especially if you are mother to many. Some people write the anecdotes down, and others just commit them to memory by repeating them to anyone who will listen, but I've come up with a few easy ways to keep a record of these utterances.

  • Frame it! Take your favorite picture of your child and frame it. While a black and white photograph works best, anything will do. Use a dry erase marker to scribble the latest saying across the top or bottom of the glass and it becomes an ever changing work of art. If you have more than one kiddo, create a wall of quotes.
  • Stencil it! Looking for design inspiration? Fill the walls of your child's room by penning, painting, or stenciling them with the family-famous sayings.
  • Journal it! Fill the pages of a leather-bound journal with all the wonderful things that come out of your child's mouth. Then take the time to read through them every so often.
  • Facebook it! Share your youngster's musings with family and friends via Facebook so everyone can appreciate your wee one's wit.
  • Twitter it! Since tweets are 140 characters or less, a private account is an excellent way to technologically chronicle your offspring's thoughts.

5 Ways to Deal With Parental Peer Pressure

Kids aren't the only ones who succumb to peer pressure.
How to Deal With Parental Peer Pressure

Kids aren't the only ones who succumb to peer pressure. There are also plenty of moms and dads who look to popular trends to guide their parenting style. Laura Baron, lifestyle coach and host of VH1's You're Cut Off, says that setting limits is key when children are young so parents don't raise dependent adults. But to be the example, mom and dad need to stand strong in their beliefs so they don't end up indulging their offspring. Here are her ways to avoid falling into pressure.

Gnomeo & Juliet: Family Film Tops the Clever Chart

Go gnome this weekend!

Go gnome this weekend! I'm not a fan of watching movies more than once, but I've already seen Gnomeo & Juliet twice (Disney flew me down for the premiere). And I can't wait to take my kids and see the animated musical again from their perspective. As a mom, I take a chance every time I head to the theater with my three children — ages 6, 4, and 1 — and cross my fingers that my littlest guy sits still. If any film can create the glue to keep him in his seat, it's this movie. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, this quirky 3D version involves British garden gnomes, Elton John cameos, and an upbeat soundtrack, but it also artfully delivers the message that love conquers all in a more positive and age-appropriate fashion than the penned original. Gnomeo & Juliet does so by being clever.

The highlights of this movie are all in the details — from the clinking sound that occurs when the adorable gnomes touch to a well-choreographed, romantic ninja scene. The film fully embraces the entire family because as much as it caters to children with its animated eye candy, there's also plenty of over-their-heads innuendo to keep adults laughing heartily. I don't want to give anything else away, but if you're looking for a feel-good and engaging family flick, buy tickets.

Celebrities Phone Truant Students and Tell Them to Get to Class

Kids who skip school in New York City may be answering to Magic Johnson.

Kids who skip school in New York City may be answering to Magic Johnson. In order to get truant students to school, Mayor Bloomberg has launched an initiative that sends recorded celebrity messages to lackadaisical youngsters and encourages them to get to class. A New York Times report said:

The campaign, appropriately named "Wake Up! NYC," rolls out next week. It will focus on the 6,500 students who have been absent for 10 or more school days in a single year and attend one of the 25 schools whose principals volunteered to join the effort. If it yields results, it will be expanded citywide, where roughly 250,000 students miss at least one month of school in a given year, officials said.

Children who shake off school can grow into uneducated adults, so empowering people at the get-go is a common-sense approach. What do you think of this program?

Do You Think Teen Mom Stars' Friends Got Pregnant on Purpose?

Is the fame and fortune of being one of MTV's Teen Moms leading to accidentally-on-purpose pregnancies?

Is the fame and fortune of being one of MTV's Teen Moms leading to accidentally-on-purpose pregnancies? It certainly looks like it. Jenelle Evans (mom to Jace), who is featured in this season's show, has three friends who are moms-to-be. Fellow spotlit teen Chelsea Houska's roommate Megan Nelson (who helps care for Houska's daughter Aubree) is also expecting. According to In Touch Weekly:

Although Keely Sanders, Amber Painter and Lauren Pruitt are said to have initially lectured against Evans becoming a teen mom, "I think all the girls idolized Jenelle," their friend Kristina Collins told In Touch. "Lauren has even mentioned how cool it would be if she got her own spinoff show." Nelson claims that her pregnancy was unplanned, but friends disagree. "[Megan] purposely got pregnant in order to become a regular on the show," one source said.

What's your opinion?
