Rachel Bilson Puts Her Design Skills on the Table

Back in 2008, actress Rachel Bilson made her foray into the celebrity designer ring with a junior sportswear line for DKNY called Edie Rose.

Back in 2008, actress Rachel Bilson made her foray into the celebrity designer ring with a junior sportswear line for DKNY called Edie Rose. The youthful, wearable, mix and match collection has been such a success that she's decided to delve into the home décor arena with a new Edie Rose dinnerware collection, available exclusively at Macy's. Featuring hand-inked florals, butterflies, watercolor motifs, and fanciful peacocks, the feminine, Spring-friendly, and classic pieces also bear modern silhouettes and are designed to be mixed and matched. From bluebird salt and pepper shakers ($15) to flower petal measuring cups ($20) to a cute-as-can-be sugar and creamer set ($25), the ceramic line includes everything, short of pots and pans, that you need for cooking and serving. But it's also got plenty to offer in the decorative department, from a blue and white pitcher ($30) that begs to be filled with flowers to an earthenware peacock lidded box ($15) that can store delicate jewelry to a painted peacock plate ($10) that would add charm to a wall. Better yet, the already affordable line is on sale. So run along and go feather your nest!

10 Palatable Prints For the Kitchen

Lately I've been looking to integrate some artwork into my kitchen, which is the sparest room in my apartment.

Lately I've been looking to integrate some artwork into my kitchen, which is the sparest room in my apartment. Considering the number of empty walls in my kitchen, I decided to go temporarily for some affordable, themed prints related to eating and drinking until I can splurge on original pieces. There's so much to choose from — especially since food and drink are a favorite subject of many — so I had a hard time narrowing it down. Here are 10 of my favorites!

Learn to Load Your Dishwasher Like a Pro

Now that we've covered the question of what is dishwasher-safe, I thought I'd move on to an equally important subject: how to load your dishwasher. The task may seem like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised by how many people earn a capital F in Dishwashing 101— I'm talking to you, roommate.

It also may seem like a trivial matter to some of you; as long as you can fit all the dirty plates in, it's OK, right? Err — no. The way you arrange your pots and spoons not only affects how well they're cleaned, but can be a deciding factor in whether they become tarnished, chipped, or even broken. So here's the lowdown on loading:

  • Arrange your dishes by height, placing the larger ones on the outside. Turn all of your plates and bowls to face the middle of machine/dish drawer.
  • Put wine glasses and other delicate glassware and dishes on the top rack. Face glassware downward if they fit, and leaning diagonally across two rows if not.
  • Place small, round cereal bowls face-down on the top rack.
  • Put pots, pans, and other heavy-duty dishes (like serving platters) on the bottom rack, where the water pressure and temperature are higher.
  • Separate stainless steel and pure silver; if they touch, a chemical reaction can cause pitting and tarnishing.

10 Creative New Year's Eve Party Ideas From Sassy Lifestyle Guru Steve Kemble

2011 is going sneak up on us sooner than we know it, so if you're hosting a New Year's Eve bash, you should start your party planning now!

2011 is going sneak up on us sooner than we know it, so if you're hosting a New Year's Eve bash, you should start your party planning now! To help us with the task, I asked "sassy" lifestyle guru and event planner Steve Kemble to share some creative party ideas for an unforgettable New Year's Eve. From making your candles burn longer to hangover-reducing care packages, check out all of Steve's tips below!

  1. Dim your lights and flood the house with votive candles. Candles are the most romantic and cost effective way to create a festive, sexy atmosphere! To make your candles burn longer, put them in a zip lock bag in the freezer the day before your party.
  2. Buy pink bulbs at any local home store (for example, Home Depot) and swap them into your lamps for the night; you will be amazed at the difference it makes and the atmosphere it creates!
  3. They may be silly, but people still love the traditional New Year's Eve party items such as noisemakers, hats, tiaras, boas, and horns. I always recommend putting these items on a platter or in a big decorative bowl and letting people grab items as they wish.
  4. Ask all of your guests to give you their three favorite songs when they RSVP for the party. Create a custom CD from this list with all of your guests' favorites! Burn extra CDs for your guests with a custom cover created on your computer to give as party favors.
  5. Casino setups are going to be all the rage this New Year's Eve. You can rent casino games from local vendors. Also consider creating your own special “play money” using your computer!
