New Geekery Added to the Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) updates its definitive record of the English language four times a year, and the latest batch of entries is full of tech-focused terms like tweet, big data, and crowdsourcing.

In a blog post, Chief Editor John Simpson said a special exception was made for the social networking verb and noun versions of tweet to be added. Typically, for OED consideration, a word needs to have been used for 10 years, but tweet "seems to be catching on."

Geekery, live blog, 3D printer, SEO, light pollution, e-reader, mouseover, redirect, and stream (in its tech sense) have also been legitimized by the premier British dictionary. It can't be too long now before college campuses begin offering Geekery Studies (which, might we suggest, should be the formal study and analysis of "obsessive interest in or enthusiasm for a subject, typically one of specialist or minority interest"). Yes, let us examine the influence of 2001: A Space Odyssey over the public image of human spaceflight. Pinkies up, geeks.

Other fun terms appended to the Oxford English Dictionary are flash mob (the parades of song and dance coordinated by social media) and wingsuit.

Adobe Creative Cloud: The Pros and Cons

Adobe's head will be in the clouds from here on out.

Adobe's head will be in the clouds from here on out. The maker of Photoshop, Illustrator, and other digital creation software pushed major updates today to Creative Cloud, a new controversial subscription-based model for its most popular products. At the Adobe MAX conference in May, the company announced that it was taking its entire suite to the cloud to prevent software piracy and provide updates over the air.

The new model also establishes a more stable revenue stream for the company because as it turns out, convincing users to pay for expensive upgrades every few years is difficult. Traditional desktop versions of Adobe programs, like Photoshop, can run upwards of $700 a piece. Will the digital artist community be willing to fork over $20 or $50 per month, instead of a one-time fee, for the same tools in a new web-ready format?

Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, After Effects, Audition, Premiere Pro, and a host of other Adobe Creative Suite tools are all getting the cloud treatment. Creative Cloud offers automatic software updates, along with additional perks like 20GB of cloud storage, workspace syncing between devices, the Adobe Kuler app, and integration with the design showcase network, Behance, which Adobe acquired in May.

But are all the bells and whistles included with Adobe CC worth it? Or is it time to switch to an alternative like Final Cut Pro or Acorn? We weigh the pros and cons after the break.

Digg's Google Reader Alternative Launches This Month

Google's beloved RSS feed aggregator, Google Reader, is heading to the cyber graveyard on July 1.

Google's beloved RSS feed aggregator, Google Reader, is heading to the cyber graveyard on July 1. But there's no need to lament, since Digg, the up-vote, down-vote social news site that was forced to shutdown in 2010, is returning to the web with a reader of its own!

The Digg engineering team posted the first screenshots of its Google Reader replacement, which launches publicly on June 26.

When Digg announced their reader in March, they hoped to "identify and rebuild the best of Google Reader's features" and anticipated a late 2013 release date. Apparently, production was sped up to roll out Digg Reader ahead of Google Reader's July end date to make migration as seamless as possible.

What can you expect from the new RSS feed aggregator? A site that's simple, fast, optimized for any screen size, free (with premium paid options later in the year), and as socially conscious as Reddit, Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook.

Sign up to be notified when the new Digg Reader has arrived, or if you need an alternative right this second, turn to one of these RSS aggregators fit for headline grazers.

Be sure to export your Google Reader data (subscriptions, bookmarked items, notes and all) before July 1 at dataliberation.org.

What Data Apple (and the NSA) Can Collect From iOS Devices

On June 6, The Washington Post published documents revealing a data collection program that allegedly retrieved private user information from the servers of the world's top tech companies.

On June 6, The Washington Post published documents revealing a data collection program that allegedly retrieved private user information from the servers of the world's top tech companies.

Facebook, Microsoft, and Google denied any knowledge of the top-secret PRISM program but, in the interest of transparency, released the number of national security-related requests they have received soon after the news broke. This week, Apple shed some light on what type of data from personal computers and iOS devices the top-secret NSA program can and can't see.

According to the company's disclosure, Apple received between 4,000 and 5,000 requests from the US government (federal, state, and local) and information from between 9,000 and 10,000 accounts were specifically asked for. Robbery, missing person, and suicide prevention investigations are the most common reasons for request. The specific data needed for these investigations were not disclosed, but the most interesting revelation was the user information Apple can't retrieve for authorities, which include:

  • iMessage conversations (which are encrypted)
  • FaceTime data (also encrypted)
  • User location (not stored in servers)
  • Map searches (not stored in servers)
  • SIRI requests (not stored in servers)

While the company did not reveal the exact user information it can hand over to the authorities, Apple's own privacy policy may provide a clue as to how our personal and nonpersonal data is collected from iOS devices.

Personal Information

This type of data is affiliated to you, your name, and your username. Children under the age of 13 (as denoted by Apple ID) are exempt from personal data collection. Data is largely gathered in two ways:

  • From an Apple ID: Name, mailing address, phone number, email address, contact preferences, and credit card info.
  • From gift certificates or share button: Info on those people, such as name, mailing, address, email address, and phone number.

Nonpersonal Information

This type of data is generally aggregated with other users, making it anonymous. It is not typically affiliated with any specific individual.

  • Occupation, language, zip code
  • Unique device identifier, location, and time zone where Apple product is used
  • Customer activity on Apple website, iCloud, MobileMe, and iTunes store
  • Information about which parts of Apple's websites people have visited as procured by cookies

Government surveillance is still largely a mystery, but details on information requests are being revealed slowly. While much remains to be seen, we do know that there is an emphasis on collecting metadeta (information about communication transactions), as unveiled in the original Guardian article, rather than data of the actual content of conversations. After all of these NSA request disclosures from tech companies, do you feel any better about your digital privacy?

The Californication of Mac OS X: What Could Come After Mavericks

Future Mac OS X Names

No one understands California dreamin' better than the tech conglomerates now nestled in Silicon Valley. Google, HP, and Yahoo! all got their starts in the Golden State, and many a startup has flocked there since.

The Northern California neighborhood is also home to Apple, which proudly inscribes "Designed by Apple in California" on the back of every iDevice. It's no surprise then, that the Cupertino-based company looked to its own backyard for inspiration in naming its newest operating system, Mac OS X Mavericks.

Sadly for feline fanatics, Apple has abandoned cats in favor of a naming scheme derived from The Bear Republic's greatest landmarks. Now that we know cats are out of the question . . . what will the next Mac OS X code name be? Here, we speculate the iconic California symbols and locales that could follow the 10th iteration of Apple's desktop operating system, plus more on the legendary surf spot Mavericks is named after.

Tumblr of the Day: Jony Ive Redesigns Things

When iOS 7 made its debut at this week's WWDC, there was only one thing on our minds: color . . . color everywhere! Apple's latest brighter, bolder mobile operating system features a kaleidoscopic palette of colors, which was undoubtedly handpicked by the company's senior VP of design, Jony Ive.

It seems as though the man behind the box with rounded corners (aka the iPhone, the iPod, etc.) was inspired by some sort of psychedelia, which left graphic designer Sasha Agapov to wonder: what if Jony Ive redesigned things that weren't iOS 7?

Jony Ive Redesigns Things is a Tumblr collection of inanimate objects, iconic movie posters, and brands, as seen through Mr. Ive's flattened, multicolored world view. This, for example, is how Apple's soft-spoken Brit imagines stop signs, and this is his vision for iTunes.

The Fantastic Four(square): Maps of Where You've Been IRL and Online

We humans are creatures of habit, which is why we won't ever tire of that burrito place around the corner, that coffee shop that serves perfect foam to espresso ratio, and that bar with the best buffalo wings in town.

We humans are creatures of habit, which is why we won't ever tire of that burrito place around the corner, that coffee shop that serves perfect foam to espresso ratio, and that bar with the best buffalo wings in town. We're proud of our stomping grounds, so what better way to rep our most frequented haunts than with real life and virtual visualizations à la Foursquare?

Two personalized maps based on Foursquare data, one created by data visualization enthusiasts Etch and the other via a collaboration between Foursquare and Samsung, reveal just how much of your city's hottest spots you've conquered.

Etch, "makers of fine data products," makes printed maps of info from Foursquare accounts detailing where you've been and how often. The custom, archival heavyweight posters ($48, plus shipping) are printed with digital presses, and they're even fingerprint and smudge resistant.

Triangle-shaped markers represent where you've checked in on the geolocation app, and the triangle's height denotes how often. Etch offers custom visualizations of Manhattan, San Francisco, and Portland, with plans to expand to more cities, both domestic and international, in the future.

Foursquare, in collaboration with Samsung, launched its own version of personalized maps in the virtual realm. Time Machine creates a fun animation of your Foursquare history, and suggests what places you should visit next.

Time Machine also compiles your history, revealing which type of place you check into most, total number of check-ins, favorite weekend spots, coffee-to-beer ratio, distance covered, and other interesting stats. Share the infographic of your geolocation history via Facebook or Twitter, and show the world where exactly your stomping grounds are.

The Galaxy S4 Active: A Rugged, Waterproof Phone Built For Adventure

Adventure is out there and, while you're out in the wild finding it, Samsung wants you to take your smartphone along for the ride.

Adventure is out there and, while you're out in the wild finding it, Samsung wants you to take your smartphone along for the ride. The South Korean company announced a more rugged, waterproof version of its latest Galaxy phone, the Galaxy S4 Active, last week.

On Thursday, AT&T said the phone will be available for preorder starting June 14. Head over att.com/galaxys4active (the page won't be live until June 14) to purchase the phone in Urban Gray or Dive Blue for $200 with a two-year contract.

With dust-proof casing, the ability to be submerged in water up to three feet deep for 30 minutes, and a water-resistant headphone jack, the Galaxy S4 Active was built specifically with rugged, outdoors-types — and clumsy fingers — in mind.

The Active shares many of the futuristic features of the original Galaxy S4, including air-gesture recognition, eye-scrolling, and touch sensitivity, even if the user is wearing gloves, but with the added bonus of water protection. Like the S4 Active, the flagship Galaxy S4 costs $200 with two-year contract on AT&T.

Water-resistant tech is having a moment this year: Sony's H20-friendly Xperia Z made a splash at CES, and is due to hit shelves any day now. When the Galaxy S4 Active arrives on June 21, it'll directly compete with the large display, Android-powered Xperia.

Looks like Samsung's new waterproof phone will arrive just in time for this season's beach-bound techies. If you're considering the Galaxy S4 Active, see all the color options and technical specifications after the break.

Myspace For iOS: A Surprisingly Solid Music App

It's been almost nine months since Myspace, the reigning social network of the early '00s, previewed its design transformation.

It's been almost nine months since Myspace, the reigning social network of the early '00s, previewed its design transformation. Now the Justin Timberlake-approved (he's a co-owner) "social entertainment destination" has come out of beta, debuting a new landing page and an iOS app.

We put the Myspace app under a mobile microscope to figure out how much the platform founded by everyone's first social network friend, Tom Anderson, has changed.

Myspace has reformatted itself to cater to the creative community (artists, writers, photographers, and the like), but there is a clear emphasis on musicians. Myspace Music had always been the company's stronghold, and the music-centric features of the desktop site, like user-created playlists and musician profiles, have spilled over into Myspace for iOS.

Internet radio apps like Pandora, iHeartRadio, and Slacker are a dime a dozen, but the Myspace mobile app distinguishes itself with well-curated, high-quality radio stations (not to mention unlimited listening). Before downloading the new Myspace, take a look at some of the platform's new features.

Genre- or User-Based Radio

Myspace for iOS is actually a mobile music-streaming service hiding under the cover of a social network app. Radio is the app's best feature: the selection of music is varied, listening is unlimited, and there's a wide array of genres and musician-based radio to choose from.

The caveat is that you can only skip a track four times, but you can switch between stations unlimited times. Our favorite radio station so far? Pharrell's.

Get more of Myspace for iOS and the radio station you should listen to after the break.

Zelda Goes to the Symphony: A Must-See Musical Experience

I'm ushered into my seat as the conductor takes her place on the podium — but an ordinary night at the symphony this is not.

I'm ushered into my seat as the conductor takes her place on the podium — but an ordinary night at the symphony this is not. The audience is in cosplay and the music of The Legend of Zelda begins, triggering memories of swashbuckling through Hyrule.

But it's nothing like the 246-megabit soundtrack I grew up with. No, this is Symphony of the Goddesses, a reimagining of the beloved Nintendo franchise, filling San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall with heroic sounds inspired by the game, while scenes from a selection of Zelda titles are projected above the musicians. The concert, now touring the US and Canada, is a must-see music experience that's not just for gamers.

After The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds' recent release on Nintendo 3DS, it seems fitting to relive the best musical moments of the 27-year-old franchise with the grandeur of the symphony.

Even if you've never channeled the justice-seeking, princess-avenging, Ganon-destroying hero, Link, the spectacle of this performance and score will move you. But executive producer Jason Michael Paul wants to reassure Nintendo fans that Symphony of the Goddesses is a completely authentic Zelda experience.

Both the music and multimedia presentation are preapproved by Nintendo, and Jason spent a great deal of effort to maintain the integrity of legendary Nintendo game composer Koji Kondo's work. "That's a heavy responsibility and I take that very seriously," he said.

Seriously indeed. Before the show, Jason showed me around backstage, where members of the 66-piece orchestra (featuring not one but two harpists because, well, it's Zelda) and 24-voice choir were preparing for the two-act performance featuring nine pieces (and, spoiler alert: several encores) from the original Zelda themes. The orchestral adaptations were arranged by composer Chad Seiter, who's no stranger to geek sounds with a résumé that includes Star Trek Into Darkness, Fringe, and Lost.

Keep reading for why this symphony has the spirit of a geek convention.

The Galaxy S4 Zoom: More Camera Than Smartphone

Samsung claims that the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which launched on Wednesday, is a smartphone with a powerful camera — but we think it should be the other way around.

Samsung claims that the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which launched on Wednesday, is a smartphone with a powerful camera — but we think it should be the other way around. All it takes is one quick glance at the South Korean tech conglomerate's latest device to realize that it's much more camera than smartphone.

The 4.3-inch, Android Jelly Bean 4.2-powered Zoom, which boasts 10x optical zoom, 16MP CMOS sensor, and Xenon flash, is the most photo-forward of the Galaxy S4 bunch. The original Galaxy S4 takes 13MP images with its rear camera, while the waterproof S4 Active captures a mere 8MP.

Added features like the Zoom Ring, which surrounds the camera's lens, acts as a shortcut button to the phone's marquee features. Twist the Zoom Ring to activate the In-Call Photo Share feature, which takes a photo and immediately sends the image to whoever you are speaking to. An Optical Image Stabilizer prevents shaky photos, keeping the camera still and reducing blur while zoomed in.

Samsung's new cameraphone is more on par with the tablet/camera hybrid Galaxy Camera, an Android-powered point-and-shoot with 16x optical zoom and a 4.8-inch touch display. At $500 plus AT&T DataConnect, the Galaxy Camera isn't exactly affordable. Samsung hasn't released pricing or availability for the Zoom just yet, but we're hoping that the Zoom will be available at a lower price point than the Galaxy Camera.

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Faceoff: Which Is the Better Console?

When the PlayStation 4 debuted in February, all we saw of Sony's latest console was a new controller, the Dual Shock 4, and a short preview of new games.

When the PlayStation 4 debuted in February, all we saw of Sony's latest console was a new controller, the Dual Shock 4, and a short preview of new games. At the E3 gaming expo on Monday night, the company finally revealed the socially focused platform's hardware and price, leaving many Xbox fans One-dering whether or not Microsoft's new all-in-one entertainment console is worth the big ticket price.

For those still on the fence about which system to buy this holiday season, we've pitted the newest iterations of the two most popular consoles for hardcore gamers — the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One — against each other in terms of price and specs.

The slightly updated PlayStation 4 hardware revealed at E3 isn't anything special. At the keynote, Sony looked away from the design, and instead stressed what the console had to offer that the Xbox One was clearly lacking. The ability to freely play used games and not having to log in every 24 hours are gamer-friendly features that give the PS4 a major edge over the super strict Xbox One.

Both consoles are big black boxes with new controllers optimized for ergonomics and sharing gameplay video with peers. Both Microsoft and Sony provide paid subscriptions for online gaming: Xbox LIVE Gold ($60/year) and PlayStation Plus ($50/year). It all boils down to what you will choose to buy this Fall.

Xbox hasn't released their full specifications for the One yet, but we've broken down the technical details and pricing information we do have. Which console prevails? See a side-by-side comparison after the break.
