Top Dog: Banana Joe Wins Westminster
Banana Joe, an Affenpinscher, took the best of show prize at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. His handler, Ernesto Lara, calls the 5-year-old little dog "Joey," but there's another nickname for the fuzzy fella: "monkey dog." Affenpinschers are an older toy breed from Germany known for their, well, monkey-like faces. They aren't extremely popular in the US, but maybe they will be now? After a successful stint in Europe, the award-winning pooch — with personality to boot — took the States by storm and was a big crowd-pleaser last year at Westminster. Now after earning his best in show title, Banana Joe will put up his paws and enjoy a relaxing retirement in the Netherlands, where he was born and bred. See the adorable pics of the top dog now!
Cold Weather Pet Care Tips

With this season's chilly temps, it's especially important to keep your pet toasty and safe. Heidi Ganahl, CEO and founder of Camp Bow Wow, shares some important tips on caring for your furball this Winter:
- Never let your dog off the leash in snow or ice. Although it may seem like a fun option to let your pup frolic in the snow, it can prove to be extremely dangerous. Dogs tend to lose their sense of smell in extremely cold weather and become lost. Believe it or not, Winter has the highest rates for lost dogs!
- Thoroughly wipe down your dog when he comes back into the house after being in the snow. It is common for dogs to ingest salts for melting ice as well as antifreeze, which can prove to be very toxic.
- Similar to how you should never leave your dog in the car during the Summer, the same goes for the Winter; a car can act almost like a freezer in the Winter, trapping heat outside and causing your pet to freeze to death.
- Fresh water is a must at all times, as your dog may be more likely to lick ice and eat snow if he/she is thirsty from lack of water. Similar to the above point, it is common for dogs to ingest snow-melting-salts and antifreeze.

Do You Think Your Pet Is Self-Conscious?

By self-conscious I don't mean your dog refusing to go outside after you've dressed him in a leprechaun costume for fear the neighborhood pups will make fun of him. The debate stems from a scientific test that's used on people and animals to determine if they are self-aware. The test includes marking the baby or animal and then seeing if he notices the marking in his reflection. Apparently, dogs don't pass. One dog enthusiast felt this was an unfair test for sniff-centric doggies, so he tried to prove that pups are self-aware with his own scent-based experiment, resulting in less-than-concrete findings. Until we know for sure, I'm curious, do you think your pet has a sense of self?

Dangerous Liaisons Rug: Funny or Frightening?

When I saw CB2's Dangerous Liaisons Rug ($229) — a reproduction of the Canberra Repertory Society's 2009 theater poster for Les Liaisons Dangereuses — I thought the fat-cat floor covering could be a funny and interesting conversation-starter. However, when I showed it to a co-worker (and cat lover), she deemed it "frightening." What's your verdict? Would you sport it in your home?
