The Eccentric History of the Cannes Film Festival

Camera flashes, flashed bare chests, and flashy screen sirens give the Cannes Film Festival some of its je ne sais quoi, and that's why it's one of our favorite film fests.

Camera flashes, flashed bare chests, and flashy screen sirens give the Cannes Film Festival some of its je ne sais quoi, and that's why it's one of our favorite film fests. After a rocky start (it was initially set to start in 1939 but was postponed due to World War II), the inaugural Cannes took place more than 65 years ago on Sept. 20, 1946, making it one of the oldest film festivals to date. What began as a stand against Fascist and Nazi propaganda is now a prestigious, star-studded event. As this year's festivities continue, see some of the international film festival's milestones and most eccentric moments in pictures!

Girls star Allison Williams — who has been busy guest starring on The Mindy Project and being the spokesperson for Simple Skincare — is best known for her role as Hannah's uptight friend Marnie on the award-winning show. But did you know she's also portrayed our favorite perfectly coiffed princess, Kate Middleton? Prior to Girls, the actress played Kate in a hilarious series of Funny or Die videos that she also wrote called Will & Kate: Before Happily Ever After. We asked Allison if she thought she'd get along with the Duchess of Cambridge. Here's what she told us:

Oh my god, I hope so! I would love to think that we would get along really well. In my head we'd be best friends. In reality she would probably think I was a starstruck American. But I would love to meet her. I think she's outstandingly composed. I think she's intelligent and well-spoken, and she seems really cool. I'd love to spend an afternoon when she has a day off just hanging out.

It would truly be a beautiful friendship, don't you think?

Ryan Gosling Is "Creepy Cookie Guy"

Thank Gos, he's back.

Thank Gos, he's back. Last night, the man, the legend, Ryan Gosling won us over yet again with a quirky tale of Girl Scout cookies on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Ryan shared how a childhood experience inspired him to buy hundreds of Girl Scout cookie boxes outside a grocery store a few years back. After realizing just how many cookies he had purchased, he decided to toss them out his car window to unsuspecting strangers. Unfortunately, the act of good will came across more "creepy cookie guy" than Santa Claus, as Ryan explained. And he joked that bystanders were probably wondering what happened to the Girl Scouts and why this guy had all their cookies. Watch the clip now to see Ryan Gosling tell the story as only Ryan Gosling can.

He also had meaningful words for his wife of 20 years, Michelle Obama, and daughters Sasha and Malia, who all joined Barack onstage. He said, "Michelle, I have never loved you more. I have never been prouder to watch the rest of America fall in love with you, too." Barack then spoke to Sasha and Malia, saying he's seen them grow into two smart and beautiful young women, but joked that "for now, one dog's probably enough." Wreck-It Ralph Cast Talks '80s and '90s Nostalgia

Disney's latest animated feature film Wreck-It Ralph, out this Friday, follows video game characters from different eras who each live in their game's "world" inside a modern arcade.

Disney's latest animated feature film Wreck-It Ralph, out this Friday, follows video game characters from different eras who each live in their game's "world" inside a modern arcade. Wreck-It Ralph, voiced by John C. Reilly, is the villain of his '80s game, Fix-It Felix, Jr., while Fix-It Felix, Jr., (Jack McBrayer) is the hero. Sarah Silverman voices Vanellope von Schweetz of the '90s Mario Kart-esque game Sugar Rush, and Sergeant Calhoun, voiced by Jane Lynch, is the badass leader of the most modern game, Hero's Duty. The movie has a lot of fun with nostalgia — just look at their 1982 Fix-It Felix, Jr. and 1997 Sugar Rush Speedway commercials — so when we sat down to talk to John, Jack, Jane, and Sarah, we asked them what they most missed from the '80s and '90s. Watch now to find out which actors miss the music of the '90s and which video games the cast mates played growing up!
