Tori Spelling Shares Her Family's Tasty Omelet Muffin Recipe

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week, we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares her husband Dean's new omelet muffin recipe.

Having a husband who is so handy in the kitchen is a blessing on its own, but when he gets the kids involved, I'm extra grateful. Cooking is a great skill to learn at any age and a fabulous way to keep the kids busy during the long summer days. Not to mention kids, at least mine, are more apt to try new things if they feel involved in the process!

His Omelet Muffins are super kid-friendly and delicious to boot (you know I love my savory cupcakes!) — they're a huge hit in the McDermott household. Plus they're convenient for the parents because the recipe calls for ingredients you always have in your house.

Tori Spelling Shakes Up Dinner With Savory Cupcake Recipes

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week, we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares some nontraditional takes on the cupcake.

Cupcakes don't make the world go round, but they do come pretty close — and not just the sweet ones! Savory cupcakes are a modern twist on the classic sweet versions that we're all used to, and have been popping up all over the country as of late… and with offerings like lasagna, maple bacon, and caprese, it's not hard to see why. Cupcakes are just such a cute, dainty way to serve up deliciousness, and coupled with my love of bite size things, this trend is ideal. If you're new to the savory concept, here are a few great recipes to get you started!

What's your favorite out-of-the-box foodie trend? Let me know in the comments and I just might feature it in a post down the road.

Liam McDermott Graduates (Preschool)! Tori Spelling Takes a Look Back!

This week, Tori shares her son's preschool graduation.

Friday was a very momentous occasion in our family. . . . Liam Aaron McDermott graduated from preschool! It was a proud mama bear's shining moment as my boy accepted his first diploma.

Liam started at his school when he was 18 months with a class called Toddler (mommy/daddy and me). After that he did three years of Pre-Kindergarten. And, on Friday, he graduated. Somewhere deep down I wanted to chant, "Liam McDermott graduates!"— à la Donna Martin — but kept it to myself.

My dapper man wore his seersucker suit and an M4L (Made for Liam) red polka-dot silk bow tie by Boutaugh. Liam chose the color palette all on his own, I might add. The school set up a nice stage for the graduates as well as a sea of folding chairs for the families in the school's rear yard. Everyone waited patiently when suddenly Dionne Warwick's "That's What Friends Are For" started playing, and then I saw my little man marching out in a line with his other pint-sized classmates and . . . cue the waterworks, which flowed abundantly and freely for the next hour.

They each walked on stage and promptly took the microphone to announce what they wanted to be when they grew up. Liam said, "When I grow up, I want to be a basketball player." It was adorable. Then they performed songs about growing up and moving on, and also sang a song in Spanish while wearing sombreros. Then, at the end, they played "Pomp and Circumstance" (this preschool graduation was no joke!) and announced each student's name to come accept their diploma. I waited patiently with a quivering lip. Then I heard it . . . "Liam McDermott."

This past weekend we celebrated Stella's fourth birthday, and I was in full party-planning mode to give Stella the tea party of her dreams.

Stella had strict orders. . . . She wanted her tea party to be all hot pink and purple with pops of yellow. For her dress, I found this amazing (and very well-priced) party dress on Etsy.com that you can order in any color tulle. It was the perfect blend of fairy couture and princess poof!

What's the most memorable b-day party that you've thrown for your kiddies?

Tori Spelling on the Shock of Baby's First Word

We're happy to share a new post from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships.

We're happy to share a new post from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares her not-so-hidden disappointment about her baby's first word.

Miss Hattie hit a big milestone last week when she said her first word. It was bittersweet as she uttered the word, "dada."

I'm sure that mamas everywhere can agree that I wouldn't be human if somewhere inside, beneath the beaming pride I felt about her accomplishment, there wasn't a little sadness that her first word wasn't "mama."

Related: Liam's World: On S-e-x!

Liam is my little man, but he came out of my belly with adoring eyes for Dean. He was Daddy's dude from the jump, so it was no surprise when his first word was "dada." He was my first, so while I was a little sad, on the whole I totally got it and was proud.

Stella, on the other hand, is SO me. Her first word was "mama," and her second word was "shoes" — we were kindred spirits from the start. I'd be lying if I said I didn't do a little dance when Stella first uttered "mama," and used my not-so-inside voice to exclaim, "Yes, I won one!" Was there something wrong with me that I was somehow keeping parental score as judged by my children's verbiage?

So now here we were, at our tie-breaker: Hattie. She was the toss-up. For seven months, she's been our little neutral party. Or so I thought! Were she and Dean secretly plotting this all along? I had paranoid visions of Dean cornering Hattie in her jumpy, monopolizing her very busy and precious baby schedule with enunciated repetitions of "dada," so exaggerated that even our half-blind and mostly deaf pug could understand. Kind of the way you're always tempted to quickly teach a curse word to a parrot when its owner leaves the room. Oh wait — maybe that's just me!

Alas, I've now spent a week saying, "Hi, Hattie . . . MAMA!"

"How's my baby? MAMA!!"

"Did you make a poopy? MAMMMMA!!!"

I think she's getting the point.

As happy and grateful as any mom is about their child's milestones, am I alone in this whole nonsense of winning the first spoken word in a household? Let me know your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

As your belly grows you lose your waist. But, when it comes to style, I say create a new one! If bump is the new black, then under the boob is the new waist!

Either belt an empire waist dress or take a loose dress with no waist and create one. Stretchy vintage belts are especially great for this or repurpose an old scarf or some rope. Even a cut up t-shirt can make an amazing stretchy belt. Add some beads to it and you’re suddenly a trendsetter. However you choose to belt your bump remember to wear it proud!

Tori Spelling Asks: Are Little Girls Born to Be Mommies?

We're happy to share a new post from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori wonders if all little girls want to be moms.

It's fascinating to me that, from the time little girls can walk and talk, they already have the mommy gene. It's so natural for them to want to be mothering and nurturing. Stella, from such an early age, was obsessed with holding her baby, changing her baby, pretending to feed it, and putting it down for naps. I often hear her calmly yet firmly reprimanding her baby doll for acting up. After she gives her tough love, I see her hug the baby and tell her, "I love you.” It's beyond beautiful!

So, I decided to make a new blog series titled Momvo (mom convo) so we can all share stories and thoughts about hot mommy topics. Hope you enjoy my first Momvo post!

tori spelling's kids

This morning I walked into the kids' room and I heard Liam and Stella talking to each other. Liam said to Stella "you're a Jewish" and Stella said, "No Liam, you're a Jewish." I walked in and said "technically you are both Jewish."

They both asked why and I said, "because I'm Jewish," to which Stella replied, "you're not Jewish, you are just a mom." I then asked them, without having a completely proper answer prepared, if they knew what being Jewish meant. They both said no.

At what age is it appropriate to start talking to your kids about religion and heritage? And what if you and your husband have different religious backgrounds? I know we weren't prepared to have this conversation yet and still completely aren't. Luckily for the time being they were distracted when they heard Dean call "breakfast is ready" from the kitchen.

Tori Spelling Asks: Do Kids Belong in Mama's Bed?

We're happy to share a new post from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships.

We're happy to share a new post from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori asks for advice on children in the master bedroom.

When it comes to the bedroom, I say the more the merrier . . . No, this is not taking a turn for the obscene; I'm talking piling the whole family — chickens included — into the bed.

I've already shared my love of TV time in the bedroom, but now Dean and I are onto another debate: whether or not kids and furry family members in the bed create a boundary between us.

Related: When to Discuss Religion With Kids

Not surprisingly, I love having the kids in our bed to cuddle, and I think the bigger the bed, the better! Dean, on the other hand, wants to up the romance and downsize us to a queen bed! He even put down blue tape on our current bed to show me the size of a queen vs. king. In his defense, we actually did have a queen bed in the beginning, honeymoon phase of our relationship, so I can see why he'd associate that with romance. But now that we have three kids jumping in and out of our sheets that would never work!

Right now, our usual routine is to let the kids fall asleep in our bed, and then move them to their own rooms. So here's my question for you: do you ever let your kids sleep in your bed? What are your bedroom boundaries? And, does a smaller bed equal more hanky panky?

Down but Not Out: Tori Spelling Shares Her Friend's Perspective on Raising a Child With Down Syndrome

This week, Tori shares a letter from her friend about her baby who was diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Today, I’m sharing a guest blog by my friend Lisa, owner of Evolution Vintage. Her son was born with Down syndrome, and in honor of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st, she has offered to share her story. When I read this, I had tears streaming down my face — not because I felt sorry for Lisa’s son Blake, but because she inspires me as a mom. I hope you are as touched by her story as I was:

Down But Not Out
By Lisa Graystone

Friday the 13th turned out to be the luckiest day of my life . . . in hindsight. I gave birth for the second time to my son Blake under very traumatic circumstances. He was born blue, lifeless and his first sounds resembled a watery gurgle, not a cry. His birth was fast and as a result he had lungs full of water and had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck twice. I was unable to hold him before they rushed him to the special care nursery for respiratory therapy and monitoring. We spent six days in the hospital. During this time, due to the shape of his eyes, the doctors suspected Blake had Trisomy 21; also known as Down Syndrome (DS). He fought to live and to be here, only now to be faced with a prospective hurdle he would continue to jump for the rest of his life. The postpartum hormones were swirling as I sat down the hall from my new son who was fighting for his life; quietly smelling the receiving blanket from his NICU nest and pumping my breasts alone in tears. Nine agonizing days later, the test results confirmed the doctor’s suspicions. The joy and relief that my son was alive was immediately shrouded in darkness, sadness, despair and shock. I am under 35 and was not given the option of amniocenteses (the test that can conclusively tell you if your baby has DS). The blood test that was available I opted not to do because of the high false positive rate and the fact that there were no "risk factors" — my first child was healthy and my ultrasounds were normal and we were reassured that everything was "fine." I was surrounded by fear and unknowns, questions with no answers and a baby boy to care for.

I have no time to be on the "why me" program being the ambitious mompreneur that I am. I had to force myself to say: "WHY NOT" and bring it on to my already full plate. There seemed to be no other alternative than to take it head on and realize that the only thing I can control is my attitude, approach and perspective. I feel very lucky to have been given this boy and with him the opportunity for personal growth, education and evolution.

I introduced Blake to my family and friends (many who live 3,000 miles away in Canada) via this letter written from his perspective:

Tori Spelling's Meaty Lasagna Recipe

Every other week, we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares her favorite lasagna recipe.

I've been making my lasagna recipe since my early 20s. When I moved into my first apartment at age 19, I decided to learn my way around a kitchen and started experimenting with my favorite cuisine, Italian. At first, more spaghetti landed on the ceiling than on the plate, but ultimately, I perfected my go to dish: T's Meaty Lasagna.

Related: Tori Spelling's Holiday Pictorial

It became my good luck dish. I made it for my friends every time one of my TV movies premiered, which back then was a lot. Hey friends, come eat lasagna and watch me get stalked, killed, and shoot a bad pimp. Ahhh, those were the days! Nowadays, I make my lasagna for family and friends whenever we feel like a cozy home cooked meal. This Christmas / New Year’s, we went away to a house in the mountains. We didn't get any snow like expected, but I did make my lasagna dinner! Here's the recipe...

Disclaimer: I've never formally written this recipe down. It's all in my head. So I apologize if I've given it to anyone before and the measurements are slightly different.

Tori Spelling Takes Us on Her Christmas Tree Adventure

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares her adventure in cutting down her own Christmas tree.

I love the holidays. To me, Christmas is a time to celebrate with my family and DIY the heck out of my house! We all know the Christmas tree is the focal point of any holiday home decor. I've done the pre-cut tree, lot tree, and the planted in a pot living tree, so this year I was determined to do the unthinkable in Los Angeles (or so I thought)...cut down my own Christmas tree!

Growing up in La la land, you tend to believe that trees come perfectly flocked and grouped together, pre-cut on a corner lot in Beverly Hills with a whopping price tag of $150 plus. I wanted out of that illusion, but never thought it was possible. Well, this year I did research and found an actual Christmas tree farm just 40 minutes outside of LA! Dean was participating in a celebrity charity golfing tournament, but the excited kid in me couldn't wait to cut down our tree, so I packed up the kids and headed to the farm.

Related: 12 Days of Crafts — Kids Hands Wreath

When we arrived we weren't given much direction. We were told to grab saws . . . a cart . . . and head up the hill!

As we headed up and over the hill into miles of Christmas trees, I might have wondered . . . was this smart?

There were literally miles of trees of all shapes and sizes. So many worked, but none were perfect.

Forty-five minutes later, as the sun was just starting to set and I realized we were all alone amidst hundreds of trees, I thought to myself . . . is this safe? I reassured myself with the realization that no one would, in good conscience, harm a saw-wielding woman and her two toddlers cutting down their own Christmas tree weeks before the holiest day of the year. Then, not at all reassured by that realization, I closed my eyes and quickly pointed to the first tree in front of me and squealed, "Look kids, the perfect tree!" Was it perfect? No. However it did have only one major bald spot, which was a win-win, as it was surrounded by miles of misshaped firs. We had a winner!

Tori Spelling Shares Time Management Tips For Moms

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. Having just given birth to her third child, Tori recently shared her tips for trying to make the most of the hours in the day.

Time, there's always too little of it! As moms, we are especially time-strapped. And if we're working, time is at even more of a premium. Given all the demands placed on us, it can be easy to feel like we're just going through the motions, fulfilling our responsibilities without truly enjoying them. But it doesn't have to be that way. Here are a few tips for balancing your needs with those of your family and your job:

  • Batch tasks – This is a great tip for increasing productivity in your work life as well as your personal life. For example, if you find that checking email distracts you while you're working, spend an hour each morning cleaning out your inbox, then turn off your email notifications for a few hours and concentrate on the task at hand. If you have a bunch of errands to run, do them all at once. Spend a Sunday afternoon cooking a bunch of dishes to eat throughout the week.
  • Overestimate – When planning a complicated day with multiple drop-offs, pick-ups, and to-do items, it's best to overestimate how long each item will take. Take everything into account, from traffic to how long it takes your little tyke to pick out socks.

Related: How to Make a Quilt from Old Scarves

  • Delegate – Guys hate asking for directions; we hate asking for help. But you can't be in two places at once, so when your calendar gets insane, make sure to get help from your husband or your close family or friends. Remind yourself that it's okay to give control to someone else you trust.
  • Quality Time All the Time – Even the most mundane tasks can become "quality time." Try to make your daily tasks fun for your kids by allowing them to participate. For example, when you go grocery shopping, let them take an active role in picking out groceries. Cook dinner together and catch up in the car on the way to school. These little moments are the things your kids will remember when they get older. What are your most cherished childhood memories? Chances are they're simple, everyday activities.
  • Take Care of Yourself – You don't have to book an expensive massage to take care of yourself, although that's a nice treat every now and then. Taking care of yourself is more about allocating time to do things that make you feel good: putting on your makeup in the morning, going for a jog in the evening (bonus points if you're also pushing a stroller), or painting your toenails before the polish completely chips away.

It's also about making healthy choices that are best for you. For example, going to bed early instead of staying up to answer emails will make you a much more productive person the next day. As they get older, your children will admire that their mother is someone who takes care of herself – after all, you are modeling behavior that you want them to emulate someday!

  • Remember to Breathe – As busy, multitasking women and moms, sometimes we overlook the simplest way to get through our day: taking a moment to breathe. Pausing to focus on your breath can help you to quell nerves and stress or simply clear your mind. Simple, but effective!

How do you balance it all? Share your time management tips in the comments below.

Tori Spelling's Pregnant Thought of the Day

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week Tori shares one of her pregnant thoughts of the day.

"A big exhale and a belly clutch goes a long way in a crowded elevator."

Recently, I posted the above pregnant thought of the day on Facebook and Twitter, and I am loving your responses!

Here are some of my faves:

From Alora: "Awesome! I loved saying 'Oh' when the baby would move and people freaking out thinking I was in labor!"

From Andrea: "I'm due Nov. 16 and noticed if I just lean forward on the kitchen counter or hold my lower back at work, people start to care that I might be overworked!"

From Vanessa: "I went to NYC with my mom when I was seven months preggo, and we were waiting in an extremely long line for a taxi, so I just sort of bent over a little and rubbed my enormous belly, and we were moved to the front of the line. Funniest part was that it wasn’t even intentional – the baby kicked me, and it hurt me enough to make me lean forward!"

Here’s one more pregnant thought I had recently: "Feeling life move inside of you is like a constant hug. You are never alone."

All my preggo ladies! What are your pregnant thoughts? Whether they are funny or sentimental, I'd love to hear them! Share them in the comments below.
