Another Acne Tidbit From the No Duh Files

Last week, I was hanging out with a guy friend when the subject of acne came up. (Clearly, I know how to regale men.) I offhandedly mentioned the prevalence of acne among adult women compared to men, and he was baffled. "Do women really get more pimples than men?" he asked. Uh, yeah. I explained that thanks to hormones, women are more likely to experience breakouts along the jawline and on the chin. He had no idea. (Lucky lad.)

Now there's more than anecdotal evidence that women break out more often. A University of Alabama study found that not only do females get more zits than men, we tend to get them around the time of our periods. (For this, they needed to do a study?) Some other findings:

  • During their 20s, 50.9 percent of women experience acne. By the time we're in our 50s, that percentage is down to just 15.3.
  • Of the pre-menopausal women surveyed, 62.2 percent noted that their acne gets worse around the time of menstruation.
  • 73.3 percent of men and women have experienced acne.

I suppose it's good to understand who's getting acne, but gosh, I could have saved these researchers some time. Just swing on by my place once a month and see my chinny-chin-chin erupt into Vesuvial proportions. Are you surprised by these findings?

What a great topic, I just broke out on my chin a couple of days ago. It's about that time of the month too. I seem to get more acne now then I ever did as a teen. I maybe had one pimple in high school. It's driving me crazy. Any suggestions to help stop it before it starts. I always try to use a mask a few days before my monthly pimples appear. I am on a very regular schedule so sometimes I can stop it but sometimes they find their way.

This is not a surprise in the least. I feel so ripped off though, when I'm bloated AND have pimples on my chin and forehead. Could I be less attractive the week before my period?

It's good to know I am not the only one, although I wouldn't wish adult acne on anyone. It totally sucks. I have had a really hard time finding something that works.

I always break out before my period :/ It use to be really bad but since I have gotten into a good routine with L'Oreal Daily Adult Acne Regimen they are not as bad. I still get them around that time but I notice that they are smaller and not as many. Apparently hormones are a lot stronger than my medicated face wash :rotfl:

I suffered from acne for years, and tried every expensive, dermatologist tested treatment with spotty results. The final solution: birth control and the Acne Free system which you can get at drugstores. Nothing has ever worked like this before and its worth a shot if you are an acne suffer like I was.

PMS on steroids is right! My hormones were so bad when I was pregnant. I never want to be pregnant again! I will never be pregnant again either! (knock on wood...let's hope the condom doesn't break tonight haha). I am breaking out on my chin, and I have KP on the back of my arms. Also effected by hormones. : /

Please!!! They need to "scientifically study" this phenomenon??? Sigh, my pregnancy hormones are making my skin break out (it's like PMS on steroids!!!) :( cry

If I breakout, it's ALWAYS on my chin...and always right before my period.

Hmm...I wonder what prompted this study, I thought it was already a well known fact? Interesting.

I also read that people who are on the phone a lot (minus a headset) in the office, will tend to breakout around the chin and jaw area becuase of the the mouthpiece on the phone. I've been wiping mine off every day with a clorox wipe and it's helped a little.

they needed a study to tell women they usually get acne around t heir period? heh...knock on wood that i'm one that doesn't, but plenty of my friends do. i wonder if the study was run by men or women.

I was reading this and felt like you were describing me to a tee! *sigh* I have my formal wedding in January and my cheeks and chin look like a pizza :-( I am going to try out this acne treatment called Harmony® Multifunction Dual IPL™/Laser System. Has anyone tried this before with any success?

That study was done by UAB, not UA. Blazers, not Crimson Tide. Two separate schools, just like Cal and UCLA.

They really needed to do a study to find that out? Ha.

I always get a giant zit on my chin or anywhere on my face really for that matter...a week before my period! Ugh! So annoying...it's like a crater...Thanks hormones :P

Although the findings int he study probably isn't news to anyone, especially women it's always nice to be able to say "It's because of my period, it's SCIENTIFICALLY proven!". hahaha

I feel so mean, I have really great skin acne-wise, always have. I'm into my mid twenties now and although I do get a crop of zits around my period I'm otherwise blemish free... except for the occasional blackhead. I find exfoliating once a week and using something to dry them out like tea tree oil or alcohol really helpful in my zitty emergencies. Something else, and due to my lack of zits, I try not to wear any concealer on them, it just makes the few 100% worse!

Wow...I would have expected more like 90+% of people to have experienced acne in their lifetime. I can't believe there are that many people who never get it! I didn't have much acne in high school, but now, in my mid-20s, I'm getting more than ever! It's so frustrating...and yes, along my jawline/chin.

aww...i love your story about crying because of your suitcase, bella!! i swear i have a good cry each month for some reason that would usually make me laugh. anyway, this is definitely not surprising. my fiance tends to ask me a lot of questions about how the world works, and i'm accustomed to making up an answer on the spot that usually end up being correct and scientifically proven. this whole acne/pms thing has definitely been one of the topics!
