Beauty Brands Team With BET For "My Black is Beautiful"

Beauty Brands Team With BET For "My Black is Beautiful"

This is pretty cool news: Procter & Gamble, the company behind brands such as Cover Girl and Olay, is teaming up with BET for a new TV show called My Black is Beautiful. Set to begin in March, the show is based on the P&G campaign of the same name. Each episode will feature interviews, personal stories, beauty tips, and other content aimed at celebrating black beauty. The first episode features First Lady Michelle Obama, a surefire ratings winner.

My Black is Beautiful isn't a new idea, though; the campaign began in 2007 to encourage women to define their sense of beauty on their own terms. And after taking a look at the website, I think P&G is on the right track. Check out this excellent discussion guide, and set your TiVos to see how the show pans out.

Bellasugar, I'd seen the queen collection but never the foundations in the store. I checked out the store finder and it might be worth the trek to check out some stores farther away to see if they include the foundations. Thanks!

I am always frustrated when anything focuses on"being black" I think by now we should all have accepted ourselves for what we are.I dont need to announce it to the world ...THEY CAN SEE MY BIG NAPPY HEAD..LOL...and the RELAX AND NATURAL SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER SUPPOSINGLY FOR BLACK PPL BY P&G DOESNT work....I personally think that being black and beautuful is easy...there is so much diversity....the colors that jus look great on us the unique texture of our hair....my hair is super fizzy sometimes bcus ever since I went natural I keep running my fingers thru my hair just feeling the curves of my curls..so comforting!!

Stop complaining about it, Tabloid, and do something about it.

ivygreene, check out the Queen collection from Cover Girl. Queen Latifah (love her) is the spokesmodel, and the line features a lot of foundations and colors created for women of color. bastylefilegirl, I agree — I'd love to see a show like this on network TV.belladande — Totally hear what you're saying. You're right, I do think they're co-opting the original Black is Beautiful movement, but at the same time, I feel like so many women (especially young girls) need to hear the message. I thought the brochure was pretty good (and surprising that a beauty brand would encourage women to challenge the ideals they see in media, pop culture, etc.) but I'd love to see a stronger non-corporate movement as well.

It is a nice thing to see but I also know that this is a great tie in to market to Black women. I just hope that this show will help young black girls see the beauty in themselves.

I'd rather cover girl came out with a "black is beautiful" make-up line so i could finally find some foundation!

yeah why is this only on BET... we need expand that message into main stream America. Those are the people who really need to understand it. You don't need to tell black people that we're beautiful you need to tell everyone else, because it's obvious a lot the them have not caught on to what we already know.

This bothers me. I don't want to appear as if I'm a total hypocrite; I am interested in beauty and beauty products. At the same time marketing strategies like these irk me. As much as I agree with some of the statements made in the videos, I don't want Black is Beautiful to be sold to black people or anyone else by a cosmetics manufacturer. When that message came from the black community with no profit motives attached, it was considered a threat. Now, it's a it's a buy-in for the beauty industry. But a dialogue is a dialogue I suppose.

I agree with you, bastylefilegirl. I don't need a t.v. show on a station serving black people to state the obvious. Be daring and put it on ABC, CBS, or NBC. That's innovative.

And also to have women of all ethnicities on it...making an effort to show all types of beauty!

I agree awesome, but I have a feeling that a large percentage of people who watch BET already recongnize that Black is Beautiful. Too bad this show couldn't come on a station that isn't marketed specifically toward black people. It would be nice to have something like this on the ABC and not that True Beauty crap they show!
