Beauty Byte: UK Bars Offering Bathroom Hair Straighteners

First came condom machines, tampon dispensers, and even perfume spritzers. But the latest bathroom vending trend is just plain weird: coin-operated hair straighteners and curling irons. (Thanks to Beauty and the Blog for the tip.) Strange, but true: A British company called Beautiful Vending has created a hair-straightening vending machine called Straight Up.

Found in nightclubs, bars, malls, and gyms, these wall-mounted machines offer GHD flat irons for customers who need a quick fix for misbehaving hair. According to the Beautiful Vending web site: "Your customer’s bad hair days are now a thing of the past, and they will thank you once our Beautiful Vending machine is installed."

Now, I can see how this might be a nice feature in a locker room or hotel — much like the ubiquitous hair dryers — but nightclubs? It's hard to imagine women taking dancing breaks to line up and straighten their hair. So please, tell me: Would you use a straightening iron during a night out?

The first time I saw this was last summer in Ibiza. It struck me as quite strange.

In a hotel bathroom maybe ... if I'm at a really fancy party that I need to touch up. Probably not in a club/bar setting where they might be a longer line for it than to use the toilet [to be honest].

Sounds great to me!!!

I would love this!! My hair is always poker-straight leaving the house but after a few drinks, and a boogie, I end up with a ball of frizz.

hmm sounds a little unhygenic to me. also, in my drunken state i'd probably end up just burning myself... or others.

I think it's a great idea! Like other members have noted, if a rainstorm takes you by surprise you can end up with frizzy hair. I, too, have wished for a hair straightener to magically appear in these situations. I don't think the hygiene issue is as dramatic as some may think. Straighteners and curling irons get really really hot, and I think that would kill any bacteria, lice, etc. I bet they'll be marketed to hotels and gyms next.

if I wanted lice i'd go dip my head in a dirty licy pillow. I don't even straghten my hair at home, so no thanks.

NO WAY! Like everyone with the hygiene issue. What was this company thinking!?

Jup, I've always seen straighteners in bars and clubs here. Obviously you don't know what girls who go out look like here, I'd say that 90% of them use the straighteners in clubs. Which is an interesting contrast with my always frizzy/curly hair and probably uncool partying clothes! :D

i agree with pollypo about drunk girls burning themselves... here's another scenario, what if there's a line of girls, especially in night clubs, and the damn thing is too hot to clean? i would rather stick to bringing a hair band or hair clip and putting my hair up... that way, it keeps me cool and still look fly than risking getting burned!

I love this idea! Just to be able to touch up a couple pieces by my face makes all the difference!

i would use it in a nightclub. all that dancing makes people sweat which puts moisture in the air. my hair + moisture = frizz but then AGAIN, i'm a germaphobe.... so using a straightener that many other women w/ who knows WHAT in their hair... not cool

That's an ingenious idea! There are definetly times I would have loved to have had this. But I agree w/ pollypo, people in clubs/bars are generally a bit on the drunk side, I don't know if it would be the best idea to use something hot when you've been drinking!

I would use it based on what photjunkie said, you just clean it before and after. I would be cleaning the whole thing each time.

I would love that, but I don't know how I feel about using a straightener every other sweaty girl with frizzy hair has used.
