The Best Bronzers For Fair Skin

5 Tips on Choosing Bronzer For Fair Complexions

Women with deeper skin tones look best wearing more heavily pigmented bronzers (some picks here), but if you're on the paler side, bronzers can often overwhelm your complexion. Don't worry, though; you don't have to look like an Oompa Loompa to get a sun-kissed glow. Find out how to bronze the right way when you read more.

  1. One step up: The key to finding your perfect shade is to go just about one to two shades darker than your natural complexion. Any darker than that and you're crossing into the unnatural zone.
  2. Hue knew? Fair-complected women look lovely in sheer, beige-browns or in honey-toned bronzers with hints of peach or shimmery pink. The point is to add a touch of golden warmth that seamlessly blends into your skin. Better yet? Use a mosaic-style bronzer that contains several light-reflecting pigments for a customized fit.
  3. Take it down: When it comes to fair maidens, the "less is more" mantra is particularly true in terms of amount of product applied. But that's not all. When in doubt, always go with the bronzer that's lighter than what you think you'll actually need.
  4. Need a bit more? Bronzer warms up the face, but a pop of peach, coral, or rosy-hued cream blush on the apples of the cheeks will add a brightening finishing touch.
  5. If you're still not sure: A face powder that's one shade darker than your natural coloring is a great bronzer substitute.

Brilliant post, thank you! I've been meaning to look into bronzers for a while, but it's all so scary. I don't want to look orange. :(

I'm about the palest person I know, and I've been using a bronzer by Hard Candy - I believe it's called So Baked in Tiki - the lightest shade and it's wonderful. It has a tiny bit of shimmer to it. It's only $9 and you can get from Wal-mart.

I'm really fair and my fave bronzer is actually Annabelle blush in #15 - matte and very natural looking. (Not to mention cheap!) I agree with the '3' technique, but I go from temple to cheekbone to chin instead, and I dust a bit across my nose, too. If you're looking for shimmer, I got a tip from a colleague who uses the Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips bronzer in Miami Strip - gorgeous and easy to customize the intensity because of the strip format. What I loved was that it looked more pearlescent than glittery, which I think is key!

Yup, those are all good tips. I really like the Almost Bronzer from Clinique in Light/Medium. I'm 110 in MUFE HD Foundation and most bronzers are way too dark for me, no matter how much I blend. But the Clinique looks very natural.

I second the making a 3 shape on the side of the face. I read about it in an interview with a makeup artist, tried it, and looks very natural!

I'm a ghost, and after much testing, my favorite bronzers are: 1. Tarte Park Avenue Princess, which has a luminous finish and no orange at all 2. Physician's Formula (I don't remember what it is called, but it is from their Eco-Friendly line and is the lightest shade), which looks a little more natural (matte finish) and is almost impossible to OD on. Some other tips I have learned (in addition to the great ones Bella posted above) Making a "3" (and backwards "3) shape on each side of the face, hitting the forehead, temple, and chin looks the most natural (on my heart shaped face at least) and doesn't compete with other makeup. For example, I wouldn't put Park Avenue Princess on my nose and ruin my primer/foundation/HD power by making it shiny looking. Also, I like to avoid putting bronzer on cheeks, because on fair skin blush seems more natural and you don't want to mix them, ending up with a very un-natural orangey tone on the cheeks. When in doubt, use a fan brush and a light touch.
