Actually the first Black woman to win an Oscar was Hattie McDaniel for the role of "Mammy" in Gone With the Wind, 1939. Halle Berry was the first to win Best Actress in a Leading Role. Hattie McDaniel won for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
