When I get a really unsightly zit I tab a bit of regular flouride toothpaste on it and leave it overnight, it really seems to dry it out and also reduces redness. Alternatively i take one uncoated aspirin tablet, add 1-2 drops of water to it, just enough to make a thick paste, then apply directly to the zit. Leave on overnight and voila, zit should be gone by morning.
