There's nothing more intimidating than being on a flight with 40 of the most gorgeous women on the planet — the Victoria's Secret Angels. Such was the case when I flew overseas with the stunning crew for the brand's annual fashion show. Obviously we can't genetically morph into these glamorous models (some of us were born shrimpy!), but what we can do is take note from their beauty books, specifically when it comes to hair.

While I was abroad, I met with GHD hair pro Lorna Moore, who was part of the official runway glam squad. She showed me how real girls can get model-inspired bombshell waves. "It's sexy, soft, touchable hair," she explained of the classic Victoria's Secret look. "It seems like you can run your hands through it, and you're not going to get stuck, 'cause there's nothing sexy about a head of hair full of hair spray. It's effortless hair. And that's what encompasses sexy hair."

Step 1: Rough-dry freshly washed hair

Step 1: Rough-dry freshly washed hair

"I personally prefer to work on clean hair," Moore admitted. "There's this myth that you have to have dirty hair to get it to do anything. That's what you use your product for."

To get the classic Victoria's Secret effortless texture, you need a bit of grit, so Moore advises to finger-dry your hair. "Your hands are the best tools that you've got to work with, so use them to smooth and shape the hair first," she said. And if your hair tends to be a bit frizzy and fluffy, then use a paddle brush to tame it.

Step 2: Add a volumizing product

Step 2: Add a volumizing product

"As stylists, we have to turn the hair into fabric," said Moore. “What that means is that it's moldable and shapable. You can put it exactly where you want it, and it's going to stay."

The key to making it all happen? The products. For this soft look, she recommends misting clean, dried hair with GHD Root Lift Spray ($22). Adding this formula to dry hair creates that workable texture you need to form curl shapes that will actually hold.

Step 3: Prep with heat-protecting spray

Step 3: Prep with heat-protecting spray

Before you put any hot tools on your hair, protect it with a product such as GHD Curl Hold Spray ($19). Clip your hair in sections, so you can apply it evenly throughout the hair.

Step 4: Create curls

Step 4: Create curls

"Bombshell hair is not too perfect or too precise with everything," Moore explained. "You want it to look like you just woke up looking like a bombshell."

To get those effortless waves, take 1.5-inch-wide sections of hair and wrap them around an iron, such as the GHD Curve Soft Curl Iron ($245). Hold the iron vertically to elongate the shape. Around the back, you can be random with the direction you wrap the hair.

Step 5: Keep curling

Step 5: Keep curling

Make sure the hair lays flat (not twisted) against the iron to give you a glossier wave. When you're done forming a curl, drop it into your palm and let it cool in a coiled shape to help it set. Then, do not touch the curls until you're totally done with your entire mane — you don't want to muss up the curls you've created!

Step 6: Contour your face with your hair

Step 6: Contour your face with your hair

Perhaps the most life-changing hack Moore offered was exactly where to curl your hair to make your bone structure look more defined. "When you're taking the hair back off the face, you only want to curl from under the cheekbones, above the jawline. It shapes the forehead and opens up the face." Wrap the two front sections around your face away from it at a 45-degree angle, starting at the cheekbone. Genius.

Step 7: Tease the top

Step 7: Tease the top

When you get to the crown of your head, create an extraflattering shape by teasing horizontal sections. Simply back-brush the underside of the section by gently running a stubby-bristle tool in both directions.

Step 8: Smooth out the top

Step 8: Smooth out the top

Keep the volume without losing the polish by smoothing out the top side of the teased section.

Step 9: Curl the top

Finish the job by wrapping the hair around the top section and holding the iron horizontally.

Step 10: Create a few pin curls

Step 10: Create a few pin curls

Clip the top to create a pin curl, and let it set there while you do the rest. "Sexy hair has always got a bit of volume to it," Moore said on why these steps are so important.

Step 11: Gently shape side bangs

Step 11: Gently shape side bangs

Moore has a fabulous tip for ladies with long bangs. Instead of curling them ("which would look silly," she mused), wrap them around the iron, but instead of going all the way around, just create a bend shape by moving the piece of hair back and forth against the wand. Again, make sure to only start the wave at your cheekbone (see step six).

Step 12: Prep your comb
Andy Barnham

Step 12: Prep your comb

Once the hair has cooled, you're ready to break up the perfect coils you've created! Mist a detangling, wide-tooth comb with shine spray. "This makes it glide through the hair and [distributes] shine," said Moore.

Step 12: Comb your curls

Step 12: Comb your curls

Comb through the bottom half of your hair. "Just tickle it," Moore said.

Step 13: Rake it

Step 13: Rake it

No comb? No problem. Use your fingers. Starting midway down your mane, rake your fingers through, gently lifting up the curls and breaking them slightly.

Also pull it away from your face. "Tease it to open up your jawline more to get the most flattering shape," Moore said. "This makes it look more natural and gives you more width. Height and width really give you that current, flared-out celebrity look."

Step 14: Hair-spray hack

Step 14: Hair-spray hack

Instead of pointing the hair-spray nozzle down, Moore suggests spraying from underneath. Tilt your head to one side so your hair drops down your shoulder, and then pull up sections, misting them. "This [technique] will really help to defy gravity, lift up that shape, and put the hold underneath it," she explained.
