Chanel Vs Dior: Battle of the Blue Polishes

If you've been following nail polish trends over the last few months, you know that Blue Satin is this season's It color. Part of the Chanel spring color collection, it's an inky shade that nearly looks black. But Dior wants you to take a new look at its blue-polish offering, which just launched as a Sephora exclusive in the States.

How will you know which blue's for you? Well, that partly depends on whether you prefer wholesome musicals or New Jack Swing. Read on:

Chanel Blue Satin Dior Poison Blue Advantage?
Color Dark navy with a subtle shimmer Dark, glossy navy It's a matter of personal preference, really.

I really like the chart, bella! you've put some thought into this. I've been scouring my town for some navy nail polish. One I've been looking for in particular is Wet 'n' Wild's Denim Chrome (see, I'm not one to spend bundles on nail polish). I recall it from several years ago when my sister wore it basically for a year or two straight in her middle school years. It's the only time I've ever seen anyone FINISH a bottle of polish and have to get a new one! Anyway, they still make the color, but I can't find a store that carries it. And other kids around the city seem to be clearing out any other navy polishes from the shelves. Long story short (well, not that short...) I've figured out how to mix my own navy using a bright blue/deep turquoise-y Sephora polish and a VERY dark purple. Oh, with a sheer bright blue shimmery coat underneath so id doesn't look flat. I put on the light shimmery coat the other day, but I have yet to muster up the effort to mix and apply the navy.

tlsgirl - you are not that far off, in fact I clearly remember resisiting the blue/bluish purple/green trend when it was first popular about 10 years ago, for that specific reason: every time I saw those shades the image that popped in my head was from Twin peaks, when they found Laura Palmer dead - yikes! I ended up giving in to the more pearly shades, so I might try this dark blue if I find something with a light shimmer, as we thought the Chanel would be - but not for 19 dollars! I woulnd't use it enought to justify that.

Ouch, $19?? They do both look very pretty in their bottles, but all these bad reviews of the Chanel are making me a tad nervous. I don't know that I'm really confident enough to buy either one. Has anyone tried the Dior yet?

Chanel all the way. only if liked blue.

I agree with daneen924... I bought blue satin just two days ago and I'm quite disappointed. Whereas black satin is really runny and thin (need at least 2 coats), blue satin is extremely viscous and thick. One coat is enough. It isn't very satin-y on my actual nails.. it's rather flat and I can only barely tell that it's navy as opposed to black...

Chanel blue satin looks so pretty..definitely not within my budget though.

Russian Navy is not similar to the dark blue Chanel or Dior colors... these are lighter. Although I prefer the texture and thickness of OPI enamels, Chanel is always the first to come out with the new colors that eventually OPI, Essie, et al copy.

So, we've had for "it" colors: black browinish black wineish black purpleish black navyish black blueish black I predict the next big thing as forest greenish black!! You heard it here first. But seriously, I love the inky dark colors, no matter which hue.

I own Blue Satin and love it; I really like the formula. Although I will add that OPI Russian Navy is a close match and I read Wet'n Wild has one called Sapphire Diamond (not sure however i posted the name in one of my blog posts here.)

see quietriot i'd have to disagree- i have chanel polish in Vamp and i think the quality is sh*t! it chips so easily and leaves red marks everywhere! i love the color but the polish sucks. so i'd lean towards dior i guess- but actually i'd leab towards opi or just getting a manicure done with it once in a while. i don't paint my own nails often enough to buy polish anymore

I bought some nail polish that looks pretty much exactly like this in the grocery store's cosmetics section for about $2 last summer. I wanted glam rock nails! lol

i do have to say that my chanel black satin is probably the longest wearing nail polish i own. two coats, plus top coat, and no chips for at least a week! and i use a computer, scrub my own dishes, and work with my hands. so i may have to consider the blue satin as a splurge......

This really reminds me of a phase that I went through when I was about 12, to piss off my mother, who said that it made me look "dead" and "hypothermic." So, trendy or not, I don't think I'm going to shell out $20 for a bottle of nail polish.

"but if i had to pick, i would pick dior just based on the fact that you pointed out bel biv devoe's poison. i LOVE that song!!! haha" You and me both ;) Nothing like a little old-school. I just bought Russian Navy this weekend and have yet to try it out, but for $8.50 it's a total bargain vs. $19.

I bought into the hype and paid $19 for Chanel's Blue Satin. And I must say, for the record, that while it looks like a shimmery, inky sapphire in the bottle - it looked a hot mess on my nails. Flat matte navy is how it appeared, to be exact. And that was in good lighting. In everyday light, it appeared more black - and matte, at that. I was very disappoited with Bue Satin...so while intrigued by the alleged glossiness of Dior's Poison Blue, I am extremely hesitant to spend another $19 on navy nail color.
