A Cringeworthy, Catastrophic Crimping Commercial

Talk about uncovering repressed memories. While browsing YouTube yesterday, I came across this all-too-familiar commercial. So maybe the '80s really are back.

I'm embarrassed to admit that not only did I see this ad as a kid and think, "Wow! That looks so cool!" — I shamelessly cajoled my parents into buying it for my birthday present. Then, when the pink prize was in my hands, I crimped everything in sight. (The cat was lucky to escape my fervent crimping campaign; Barbie, alas, was not so lucky, and her hair melted quickly.)

So if this brings back some awkward memories, it's not meant to shame you. Instead, think of this ad as a chance to put them to rest for good.

LOL!! I had the crimper as well, although I didn't use it that much, b/c my hair won't curl nor crimp! I guarantee it's still in some box at my mom's. I'd love to find it! :)

Oh yes, I had this! I was in middle school/junior high in the late 80s and let me tell you, this thing was QUITE popular. Too funny!

I had a crimper! Sadly, my hair never really crimped properly. I guess that's a good thing in retrospect.

ktc71, I know the wave crimper of which you speak. I wanted that one too, but my mom said no. Turns out that I owe her some gratitude! ;)

I had one too....more of a wave though. I loved it back in the day! I'm a total 80's lover, but can't say I would ever take one of those to my hair again. :)

Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who tortured Barbie's hair :-p. I, too, learned the same lesson as you did with your crimper after taking a curling iron to one's hair.

I remember my mother taking the crimper to my hair! And I loved it. But I'm glad it's over with. Never again!

My god, I remember this. It's amazing the things I put my hair through when I was younger.

LMAO. I never got the change to crimp my hair but I wanted to so badly.

LOL - I had a crimper, but it came with interchangeable plates and styling heads. I actually had triangle "curls" for a week or so! I'd never crimp again, although I can imagine that the horrible trend will make its way back eventually. :(
