DIY Pillbox Lipstick Palette

A Do-It-Yourself Holiday Gift: Pillbox Lip Palette

What's bigger than a breadbox — er, pillbox? Why, a pillbox filled with some awesome lipstick shades — all chosen by you, of course. If you're on a budget for the holidays, why not go the route of DIY by making friends and family their own lipstick palettes?

Here's what you'll need:

  • A pillbox — Try this festive green Inventures Product Pill Box ($4.99) or head over to your local drugstore to seek out varieties that cost even less.
  • Inexpensive lipsticks — Seven or more, depending on how customized you want to get and how many palettes you want to gift. Pick a few neutral colors and some bold or unexpected ones, too. I recommend NYC lipsticks or Wet 'n' Wild Silk Finish Lipsticks ($1.16). Try to choose colors that fit your friend's own unique personality and shades that correspond with days of the week. Saturday deserves a bold red, don't you think?
  • A cutting object — A butter knife will do.
  • A microwave — To melt the lipsticks down.

To see how to make 'em,

.

First, lop off your chosen shade and drop it in whichever slot you'd like. You'll probably be able to get two to three uses per lipstick, so eyeball accordingly. Fill in each slot with a different color. When you're done, it's time to nuke it — in about 10-second increments. The point is for the lipstick shades to settle into their new space by molding to the shape of the pill box. No bubbling liquid hot magma, mmkay?

While your loved ones can always use their fingers to dip into their new treat, consider tying a lip brush to the box, too. Also, if you're not feeling the whole "days of the week" theme, try decorating the pill box with stickers, and have some fun!

See, THAT is cute. I've seen pill containers that stack, each one screws into the one above it, then the top one has a lid...that'd be a nice way to make a set to give someone.

They have cute little sanrio and christmas type palates at Michaels craft store for around $2.00 Such a cute idea! thanks! I bought cute little felt and swarovski crystal earrings for my close friends (AND CHEAP!) and wanted a little something else. I got the earrings @ http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5847790 Such cute stuff! And the earrings were only $6 or $7. Now to find gift bags....

LoveSarah's version is totally cute in a clean looking little jar with printed labels she made herself. My problem with the original Christmas gift idea was not the homemade aspect, but the whole pillbox thing that made it seem kind of creepy and unsanitary. Excellent zing, btw, cocochic. I appreciate your goodwill and kindness.

I think it'd be great for an en-masse gift--it'd definitely expensive if you just did it for one person, though. I think I'll do it with the $2 lip palette that punk glam queen linked to, because then you'll buy six or eight lipsticks but you'll use the whole thing... so it could be like, $35 to make 'em for ten people. I'm always looking for cheap but cute gifts for those people who require more than a card but less than a present... like the girls I work with or the girl you do your homework with. There's usually about ten of those.

Great idea! Think I may do this for myself as well :)

For myself the pillbox would be fine, but I think if I did it as a gift, I would use a nicer package.

Has anyone done this? I would love to see someone's real finished product just to seehow it turns out. I've noticed pill boxes that are round too, I think that would be cute too.

I just love your little DIY projects, Bella. I think this will be super cute for some girly fun one day with my daughter.

The Sanrio store has cute pill boxes of Hello Kitty, if you are willing to go searching for them. I have one of Chococat for left over lipsticks to make lip gloss.

I'm not that big on DIY projects in general, but this looks like fun for a teen sleepover or a weekend/rainy day mom and daughter project. I agree with a few of you that this could come out to a pricey project however!

I love this idea! I used to do it with those awesome Japonesque lip palettes that come with a little brush and mirror. (They're like 12 bucks. More expensive than a pill box, though!) This would be sooo fun to make for someone, and especially if you picked colors that would look good on them, they'd love it! I know I would.

in the end its not that inexpensive - 7 lippies (maybe 2 bucks each) plus the container, plus tax bring it to close to $20. If I want to go DIY with gifts, I think a better option is a homemade picture frame with picture, or put together dry ingredients for a soup mix in a pretty glass jar, or even giving away one of the free little makeup bags you get with a GWP, and fill it with a bunch of your unused makeup/skincare/perfume samples that you never got around to using. lord knows I have a ton of those. its just that when I see those pill boxes, I immediately think, nursing home.

I don't see why this is a shock-inducing gift. I think there is a lot of thought that goes into it. Plus, if you think this is ridiculous you're friends probably wouldn't do it for you anyway.

A nicer, even more inexpensive alternative are these empty palettes: http://www.makingcosmetics.com/store/product.php?productid=16360&cat=276&page=1 They are only $1.39 each, and the price goes down to $1.17 each if you buy more than 10. I would make a custom label to put on the back complete with interesting names for the new colour mixes!

I have to agree with ThePerfectScore and emalove. It might be fun with a little girl or to salvage a beloved lipstick, but the idea of giving micromelted lipsticks in a days of the week pill container as a Christmas gift, however well-meant, is just shock-inducing. Or hilarious. I'm not sure which. I've seen those exact pill containers at the dollar store, btw. Gotta run. I've gotten a late start on this year's home made Christmas gift. Potato clocks for everyone. Out of real potatoes! Bye!

Yes, I agree with ThePerfectScore...it would be fun to do with a younger girl.

I think this is a cute activity to do with your pre-teen for a birthday party... Like a little keepsake.. I think older women would prefer more luxury lipstick choices.. Lord knows the older I get the more intense I'm getting about high end cosmetics... yes I have turned into a make up whore!

awesome awesome awesome idea!! I love anything DIY, and of course anything lipgloss-related! And, hello, you can get everything you need at the $1 store!!

I've heard this can change the consistency of the lipstick. However, I think it would be cute, especially in those little flip-top paint palettes!
