When you wear a ponytail with a glamorous gala dress (like a Saint Laurent one!), it can't be too sporty or too fussy. Just like Goldilocks would say (if she were to take over Giuliana Rancic's job), it has to be just right. And that's exactly how we felt the moment Fifty Shades of Grey breakout star Dakota Johnson made her Oscars debut.

Of course, she nailed it, since none other than the great Mark Townsend created the style using Dove hair care. Let's break down the fabulousness: Her wispy bangs skimmed her eyes in a sexy, come-hither way (because obviously) with effortlessly cool longer pieces falling out on the sides. The top was teased to give it volume and height. The actual pony was pulled back in the middle of her head, keeping it sophisticated instead of something a high school cheerleader might rock. The textured tail made it modern, since undone waves are this season's It trend.

Dakota's face was equally perfect, thanks to Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua. Bold brows, a soft smudgy eye, and creamy porcelain skin flattered her features. But what made it go from casually chic to utterly elegant was a matte cherry-red lip. The shade Bua applied was Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Gabrielle ($36). We are already pinning this look to our Must Try Pinterest board. Keep reading to see more stunning photos of Dakota!

Towsend shared his inspiration for her hair: "Working with Dakota has been such an incredible and inspiring experience. For the 2015 Oscars, I wanted her hair to reflect her personality and style, and the Saint Laurent gown she chose to wear was very vibrant. We decided her hair should be off the dress, but not necessarily up, so I went for a young, cool ponytail. She has the most amazing fringe, so we kept them down with some face-framing layers to keep the style modern and perfectly imperfect."

To create texture and grip, Townsend liberally sprayed Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo ($5) throughout her mane. After he pulled it into the updo, he added even more friction by spritzing Sally Hershberger Glam Waves Style Shaper spray ($13) into his hands and raking it through the ponytail.

"The key to dressing up a ponytail is in the details," said Townsend. "So I pulled a small amount of hair from the ponytail, wrapped it around the base to hide the elastic, and secured with bobby pins." Easy!
