Doing Drugstore: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Talk with any beauty editor or dermatologist, and chances are, they'll recommend Cetaphil ($10.47). The gentle line of face cleansers and lotions is favored for its ability to dissolve dirt without overdrying skin. And yet, I never tried the cleanser until this year.

I'm glad I finally did, because I've found an affordable everyday cleanser. The great thing about Cetaphil is that it doesn't overpromise. It just does what, at a basic level, a cleanser is supposed to do: get rid of the dirt and excess oil. I'm not crazy about the scent, which is ever-so-vaguely reminiscent of a doctor's office; then again, the fragrance is pretty soft, so unless you're mentally taking notes (for, say, your Doing Drugstore review), it probably won't bother you. For people with sensitive skin, or anyone who's lucky enough to have low-maintenance skin, you really can't go wrong.

Sure, I love fancy cleansers because their packaging is sleeker, or they have wonderful scents—and truthfully, I'll probably continue to try those out from time to time. But I'll have a hard time finding something as good at this price, that's for sure.

It's great for people with dry skin. I used it for awhile as teenager but I need something with more oil control for my combo skin.

i LOVE this stuff. I use it for day and night cleansing. In the summer I like to use the moisturizer as well. I use the blue one on my son because he was born with eczema and with the attention I gave to his skin he no longer has eczema.

I'm one of the few who have very low-maintenance skin. I've been using Cetaphil since I was in the 8th grade and still use it now that I'm a senior in high school. My skin is so sensitive that just the basic cleanser such as this won't freak out my skin so-to-speak. Cetaphil combined with Nivea moisturizing toner and a moisturizer, such as Clinque Moisture Surge or Philosophy's Hope in a Jar, is so basic and simple that makes it easy on my skin. It's so good in fact that I have had only one major breakout of acne in the close to five years I've been using it. Its definitely a plus.

Hey, I have some of that! I had to go to a doctor's office once, to get a death certificate signed, and they had a box of little bottles at the receptionist's desk. She said I could have a couple, so I took a couple. They're great for on-the-spot hand sanitizing, which is something that people in my line of work value.

if you have acne prone skin a tip is to use cetaphil in the morning and then your hasher/more medicated product mixed with cetaphil at night. i did it with proactiv and it worked wonders without drying my skin.

Goldilocks, tell me about it, I've seen some outrageous prices for it in Unichem.... Cant live without it though, my first dermatolgist recommended it after a bad reaction to a moisteriser when on Accutane, and it made an amazing difference! Thanks god or I would have been a crazy peeling monster at my high school ball!

I've had 2 dermatologists recommend this to me and it's all I use! It's mild and non-irritating and did I say my dermatologist (current AND previous) recommended it? ;)The only thing that does irk me about it is when I'm at the makeup counter somewhere and they ask about my skin regimen and I explain I use cetaphil cleanser plus prescription acne creams and they always think they have a better product. Come on, I love the big brand name cleansers and stuff as much as the next guy and would be all over them if I didn't have problem skin, but do they really think they know better than my DOCTOR? Humph!

This is my favorite cleanser in the world!!! I've used it since I was 18 and will probably never use another cleanser (other than the exfoliating cleanser I use twice a week). Cetaphil never irritates my skin. I love it.

i totally agree with the fragrance comment - i can't decide if it smells nice or too antiseptic. and it does a good job of cleaning and being gentle. good in a pinch!

i used this in the past... until i found out it contains sodium laurel sulfate (not sure how to spell this) it is a harsh detergent that really should not be used on the body, especially the face. In the long run it dries and dehydrates the skin. I learned this after becoming an esthetician and working with a dermatologist. which is funny since it was a different dermatologist who told me to use it in the first place.

Let me tell you. I have been using this product since I was a senior in high school. I broke out something teriable on my forehead and went to the dermatolgist. He told me to start using this and I never turned back. It is the best cleanser ever. I have oily/combo skin and It never over drys it. I have been using this for over 10 years and I will never betray it!
