5 Great Shine-Fighting Tips For Summer

If steamy temperatures cause your skin to behave like a hormonal teenager's, you're not alone: "The combination of greater humidity and the fact that you're sweating more can exacerbate oil production, resulting in increased shine," says dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, who offered up her best tips on looking cool, calm, and collected. See her tips when you keep reading.

1. Gel for a while. "Stop using the heavier cream cleansers that you benefit from in winter. Instead, switch to a gel to help control and absorb oil," says Hirsch. We like Clinique Wash-Away Gel Cleanser.

2. Do the math. "Leave your cleanser on twice as long before rinsing and then use half as much moisturizer as you typically do," advises Hirsch. "The same product will work totally differently."

3. Can't touch this. It may seem counterintuitive, but tackling shine by overexfoliating only worsens the problem. "When you aggressively strip the skin of oil, the skin acts as if it's under attack, which often can yield even more oil," says Hirsch.

4. Protect yourself. As if you need yet another reason to wear sunscreen: "Oil is actually something your skin produces to help heal injuries," Hirsch says, "so sun exposure is only going to make you produce more oil."

5. Meet matte. "Use a powder that contains clay," suggests Hirsch. "It functions almost like a sponge, soaking up any oil, without adding bulk to your skin." A good one: Tarte Smooth Operator Micronized Clay Finishing Powder.
