5 Eco-Friendly Beauty Buys That Actually Work

The following post was written by Christy, who blogs at Sparkles & Spinach, and is part of POPSUGAR Select Beauty.

When most people think of eco-friendly (and people-friendly) beauty, they probably picture shopping at Whole Foods and picking up a bar of patchouli soap. Not that there's anything wrong with either; Whole Foods is one of my favorite stops for amazing beauty deals. But green beauty has come quite a long way, and is far beyond shopping the aisles at your local health store. I personally have been chemical-free for the last two-plus years and will not use any products that contain toxic components. I consider myself a green beauty maven with purist tendencies! I try to find the cleanest — and by cleanest, I mean nontoxic — beauty items that fit a middle budget. If they multitask, that's even better. So here are my top five beauty buys that are not only safe, but amazing as well. Get the full selection when you read more.

First on the list is a product I've been using only a few months, but I love it. I've been a longtime Shea Terra user and have been using many of the brand's products for years. They have such a variety of items that are good for you and reasonable in price. This might not look like a big jar, but let me tell you . . . it will last forever. It contains tons of Lava Clay Chips ($18) that I grind down with a mortar and pestle, then mix with a little filtered water or coconut water. You only need about one to two chips per use. They are great alone as a mask or you can get fancy and maybe add a couple shakes of cinnamon and turmeric or your favorite essential oil. Also check out the mint black soap ($18).

Another fairly recent favorite is this set ($15) I picked up from Costco. Jenna Hipp polishes are five-free, which means they don't contain any of the nasty chemicals that you might typically find in your polish. They are small, but there are so many shades that they should last a while. They also dry super fast, which can be a pain if you aren't a fast painter, but great if you tend to smudge polishes with a longer drying time. They seem to be sold out online at the moment, but I know many Costco's carry them in store.

Next up is this lotion ($10) by a brand called Nourish. They offer an assortment of lotions, body washes, body polish, and deodorants. My favorite part about the line is that the website offers great deals! I love all the scents so much, I have a hard time choosing. I'm definitely a vanilla girl, so it's a favorite. But the fig also smells lovely. And the deodorant ($8) is awesome. If you've ventured into the world of natural deodorant, you probably know that it really can be hit or miss. This deodorant works pretty darn well, and I've tried a lot of brands out there. I do need to layer it with another stronger product in the Summer months, but it works great alone during the rest of the seasons. My favorite is the lavender mint, which smells fresh and doesn't compete with my other scents. The best part of this brand overall is that they are not only extremely wallet-friendly, but USDA organic as well, which means absolutely no icky ingredients.

Item number four is a multitasker. Pacifica is another one of my go-to brands and they just recently came out with skin care, as well as a line of color cosmetics that will blow your mind. The thing I love most about this palette ($14) is that the colors look gorgeous on anyone and can be used on lips, eyes, and cheeks. You could even highlight your collarbone. It contains skin-nourishing ingredients and is even vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free (a must for me). I'm also a huge fan of the lip products ($7-$12)

Last but not least is one of my most favorite products ever. This perfume palette ($28) by Melange Perfume is beyond amazing. I found this company a couple years ago when I switched over to natural fragrance and they are my one true love. I'm a fan of solid perfumes because I love to blend and create my own unique scent, and that's exactly what the purpose of these darling little palettes is. They house four fragrances in a beeswax or jojoba base and you can wear each single scent alone, mix a couple, or mix them all. The possibilities are endless. This is my favorite product in terms of versatility because you get so many scents for the price. I have the Amber Notes Palette No. 2, and I can't get enough. I love sweet, smoky, and sultry scents, and this fits the bill for sure. I love that I don't smell like everyone else and that I can mix it up when I want. They offer a scent profile for everyone, whether you love fruity, fresh, or spicy. Next up on my list is the Amber Palette No. 1.

I hope you enjoyed my top five green beauty staples. If you've tried any of these items, I would love to hear your thoughts.
