Get the Smoke Stink Out of Your Hair

There's nothing like going to a rock show, staying out late, coming home... and realizing that your hair holds the remnants of the club's cigarette smoke. I used to live by the Empty Bottle in Chicago, and before the city instituted its smoke ban, going to a show meant that my hair would smell like a dozen ashtrays. Not fun.

But lo! Reader Fixe had a good suggestion in the beauty shortcuts thread. Before heading to bed, she slips a fabric softener sheet in her pillowcase. In the morning, her hair smells like Snuggle Bear, not like Joe Camel. Because San Francisco has a smoking ban in clubs and bars, I can't test her tip... but it's so easy that it's worth a try, don't you think?

i never thought of that! i'm gonna try it. @plus_2_kid: i shower, but i don't always wash my hair because it's really high maintenance. if i wash my hair every day, it will get really damaged.

Why is it so hard to shower?

This is pretty much a thing of the past, now, since so many localities have banned indoor public smoking. New York, Philadelphia, and all of NJ are smoke-free, so no place I'm likely to go is going to smoke up my hair anymore.

Interesting, I'll have to try it when the need arises.

I use the dryer sheet (but I foof it through my hair), and I also spray Febreeze on my hairbrush, let it dry most of the way, then brush my hair. Works like a CHARM.

Virginia has just got on the non-smoking bandwagon. I can't wait for it to be enforced. I'm happy for the tip; it's a great thing considering a lot of my friends smoke.

in high school we'd all go to hookah bars every weekend. I used to hate the smell in my hair the next day. it actually disgusted me, like I wanted to throw up. I wish I would've known about this..

I hate the smoke smells too. I am not a smoker and can't stand it when I go to a bar or restaurant and have to deal with the smoke. It kills my hair and clothes. I live in Michigan and they WILL NOT bann smoking in bars and restaurants. We are always the very last state to get anything passed. I hate Michigan!!!! Its no wonder we are on the top of the list for the most unhealthiest people in the country.

Yeah, smelly jackets :( The dryer sort of works, or I'd spray it with febreeze or something, and leave it outside to air out.

It worked for me. Silly South Dakota is only currently going through legislation to ban smoking. The dryer sheet worked miracles for my smoke scented hair. Unfortunately, I'm getting a little sick of washing my jacket all the time. Maybe the same thing will work for that: five minutes in the dryer with some dryer sheets!?

smoking is banned in most public places where I am. But if I go to a club I just know I have to wash my hair before bed.

I think I'd rather smell like smoke than dryer sheet.

I love the Stila Hair Refresher too, Cloroxcowgirl! I have the Creme Bouquet scent. Massachusetts (where I live) also has a smoking ban in public places, but I do have some friends that smoke and am around them sometimes. This is a good tip!

Thanks for sharing the tip, Fixe! And I'm with all of you who love the smoking bans. Whenever I go somewhere without a ban, I'm amazed by how quickly my asthma-addled lungs start burning.

I'm all about Stila Hair Refresher when I get nasty smoke or food smells in my hair and can't shower right away. The smoking in buildings ban here California def. helps, too.

Maybe I'm overly nostalgic, but when I was a teenager I loved getting home too late from concerts to wash the stink out (my school bus came before 7am)... all day in class I'd catch whiffs of my hair and it would "take me back" to the fun time i had the night before.... lmao i'm so lame! I wish you could still smoke in bars ;)

Before the smoke ban I used to have the same problem. And then I read from a newspaper (I think) that when you blow-dry your hair with the cool fynction it gets most of the stink out. and it actually works! It's a bit of a work but so much easier than taking a shower. but now I'm just loving the smoking ban :)

I used to HATE when they allowed smoking in places here in Boston. I lived at the Middle East, TT's and the Paradise and my hair would not only reak but be covered in a nasty film. My solution no matter how late errr early it was I showered before bed...

I think it's a good idea, but dryer sheets smell too strong to me; too chemically. I use sebastian dry clean (one bottle has lasted so long, I'm not even sure if they make it anymore) before bed and brush out my hair.
