Glycolic Acid

Definition: Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is considered a natural fruit acid (it comes from sugar cane) as well as an alpha-hydroxy acid. It is used to remove heavy rust and grease from metal materials, but it is better known for reducing the buildup of dead skin cells.

In addition, it draws moisturizers into the skin and is commonly recommended for use in combination with a toner and cream to create an even, smooth, and more youthful-looking complexion. It often creates a tingling sensation on skin, but it shouldn't be painful upon application.

There is a bit of controversy surrounding glycolic acid because of its potential dangers. (Remember, it's also used to remove rust from metal!) If the concentrations are too high, it can cause serious burns. Also, skin becomes sensitive to sunlight, so a high SPF is necessary when going outside. Have you ever tried any products containing glycolic acid? If so, were the results worth it?

glycolic is in MANY professional skin care products. I'm currently using it in my night cream. It's some GOOD stuff!

I used DDF glycolic toner 10% for about 1.5 years in combination with persagel for acne...it worked really well up until 6 months ago and then it just stopped and i started breaking out really badly...I don't know if it was the glycolic acid or the persagel that stopped working, but I have read that you do reach a plateau with glycolic acid

i've got MD pharmaceuticals glycolic something...i got it when i first started using a blackberry-phone and got "blackberry face," or blackheads all on one cheekbone. it got rid of them within a few weeks (along with using anti-bacterial wipes on my phone everyday), and my facialist said i had good texture, etc. so i guess i'll stick with it.

my derm told me to use Aqua Glycolic Acid toner to get rid of acne scarring I had on my forehead. While it did remove some scarring, it didnt get rid of a few spots. But then again I didnt use it the way she recommended it..she said to use it twice a day INSTEAD of face wash....I did it like once every other day...I duno but I like that CLEAN feeling face wash leaves lol..but I'm thinking about trying it again...it can be found behind the pharmacy counter at like a CVS..non prescription..

LOVE IT. I use grapefruit Mario Badescu Glycolic Toner . While it does tingle it exfolliates my skin and leaves it taut and shiny. I believe it also keeps my skin on the clearer side. I don't have the best diet so I get breakouts often. If you are trying it for the first time please use it in one spot and see how your skin reacts.

I love, love alpha hydroxy. In addition to clearing up skin, it smooths it out and even skin tone over time. I also use beta hydroxy because it exfoliates with-in the pore, while the alpha exfoliates on the surface.
