Hair Used as Fertilizer

Fertilize Your Garden With. . . Hair?

Mary Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow? Why, with snippets of hair from the salon, of course. Yep, it's no lie. In fact, I remember my grandma tossing clippings from my aunt's salon on her soil and hairstylist friends telling me about the ladies who would come to pick up their bags of "gardening hair."

While this concept isn't really all that new to the gardening community, a recent study analyzed the effectiveness of human hair compared to commercial fertilizers as a nutrient source for plants. I won't get into the details, but here's the article if you want the to the lowdown.

Why hair? It's got a uniquely structured nitrogen content that plants love. I can't help but wonder. . . does that mean hair color or traces of drugs like pot or the pill could seep into the rhubarb that will eventually end up in one of grandma's pies? Regardless, the next time you're getting a trim, think about how you might be contributing to the circle of life. Talk about being truly organic.

Hmm. I let the hair from my dogs hairbrush fly off in the breeze as birds pick it up and use it when they're nesting. (any other time of the year it goes in the bin) I dunno if I'll be putting my hair or anyone elses on my veggie patch though.

My dad uses hair to ward off deer too! He puts it up in little nylon bags (made from mom's old pantyhose). It's funny to see and it totally doesn't work.

My grandmother used to throw hair on the garden and in the compost too! When I worked at a salon we saved hair for a few people who wanted it for their gardens. Since I started composting, I put my husband and daughter's hairbrush remnants in there but keep mine out as my hair is coloured.

I also agree about the new layout. It's weird. Seems like maybe they needed more advertising $$. About the hair...it's strange but if I actuallly had a garden, I would try it.

I'll try anything... some of the craziest thing are amazing for plant growth like using the old soapy dish water after you wash dishes.

I agree bacon, this new one has unnecessary things that do make the site more difficult to navigate. About the hair I don't know exactly the effects of using decomposed colored hair for fertilizing, but for hair of women that are on the pill I can say that the hormones taken en up in drinking water through urine, since drinking water is not treated against hormones: the urine is gone but the hormones stay and that, among other effects that will also affect women, can cause a lower sperm count ... Just thought someone would be interested.

I put hair from my brush and hair from brushing our animals in the compost pile. It would be a little weird to see someone's garden mulched with straight out hair though~

Sorry to be off-topic, but does anyone else find the new layout to be hard to follow and not very user friendly? I used to love, love this site, and now I don't plan on using it very much. I tried to look on here for Golden Globe highlights and I went to another website because theirs was easier to use. Please bring back the new layout, please!!
