5 Refreshingly Easy Ways to Detox Your Skin Before Summer

Your skin is your largest organ, so in order to properly detox it (i.e., get all of that gunk out of your pores), you need to start from within. You'll notice clearer, cleaner-looking skin just from eating better, avoiding sugar, and drinking plenty of water. Once you have that part under control, then you can begin to really tackle the surface.

We spoke with a dermatologist, Dr. Mona Gohara, to find out how the latest "It" ingredients in skin care can help keep your face free of toxins and pollutants. And as gross as it all sounds, thanks to salt baths and charcoal masks, the skin detox is actually pretty pampering. Hello, Sunday night wind-down — aka Netflix and mask.

Drink Water

"If there's anything in the body that shouldn't be there, drinking water will flush it out," said Dr. Gohara. "In order to try to detox your body and therefore your skin, you want to up your intake."

The rule of thumb is to drink eight glasses of water per day, but most people don't live up to those expectations (hey, it's a lot!). Keeping a reusable water bottle with you at all times helps take the pressure off the count and aids in mindless chugging. If you already hydrate religiously, then add another two glasses to your daily intake.

The first step in doing an external skin detox is to bathe and exfoliate with salt. "The mineral helps to draw toxins out of your skin and open up your pores, making them more susceptible to other ingredients," Dr. Gohara stated.

Try adding two cups of Dr. Teal's Epsom Salt ($5) to your bath and soak for 20 minutes, or using Lush Cosmetics Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub ($22). Rub it around your face and body in circular motions to stimulate circulation. Because the salt particles are ultrafine and they're mixed with moisturizing ingredients like avocado and coconut, it's gentle enough for weekly use.

Eating your antioxidants (such as a bowl of berries) helps to target existing inflammation from within. Or combat it topically by using serums containing vitamins A, C, or E, which prevent surface damage caused by pollutants and UV rays by neutralizing free radicals. With daily consumption and topical use of antioxidants, less damage is caused to the skin, making it easier to achieve a flawless face.

"Charcoal acts like a vacuum as it sucks impurities out of the skin," Dr. Gohara explained. Face masks containing activated charcoal like Origins Clear Improvement ($25) are so strong that pollutants and toxins are attracted to them like a magnetic force.

We're also fans of using Biore Deep Cleansing Charcoal Pore Strips ($7) to get the gunk out. Like masks, the targeted strip binds to blackheads and impurities on your nose, which is where most of the clogging is visible.

In order to keep your skin from looking dull due to too much congestion, add a charcoal mask into your regimen once per week for a deep clean.
