How to Get the Most Out of Lipstick

7 Ways to Get More From Your Lipstick

For years and years, I've been aboard the lip gloss train. But after trying out YSL's Rouge Volupté Lipstick ($34) and MAC's Viva Glam ($14), my perspective has changed thanks to their satiny finishes and sheer, flattering tones. Check out some tips to get the most out of your lipstick when you read more.

  • When a stain's a good thing: For a sheer wash of color, hold the tube of lipstick upside down on the center of your lips. Then, so that the the product brushes on ever so slightly, just press down on the lipstick using your lips to distribute it, and voilà! It's an instant stain of color.
  • Reinvent the wheel: Instead of buying multiple formulations of lipstick, just alter the finish yourself. For a matte texture, dust on loose powder over your lipstick to dull it down. For a shiny texture, just add gloss or Vaseline.
  • Bottom of the barrel: Even if your lipstick is down to the bottom of the barrel, it still has lots of life to give. Use a lip brush, like Boots No7 Retractable Lip Brush ($7), and dip it into the remnants below the surface to get more usable product. Or, you can always collect several of your old lipsticks together to make this lipstick palette pillbox.
  • DIY gloss: Speaking of the extra lipstick at the bottom o' the tube, why not find a cute tin on Etsy or eBay to hold your own homemade lip gloss? Just mix the remaining pigments with some Vaseline and place into the tin.
  • If it's broken, fix it: Broke a lipstick? Don't throw it away. Follow these easy tips to bring it back to life.
  • In your face: Thanks to grandmas everywhere, we all know the trick of using a lipstick on the cheeks as a makeshift blush. If you're in a pinch, you can also use a lipstick on your lids as a shadow. The only caveats are that it has to be an appropriate color, and it can't be too shiny (matte is probably the best finish for this), otherwise it'll just slip all around.
  • Customized color: Not only does a lip liner help you get longer-lasting wear out of your lipstick, but by playing around with different shades and tones, you're also able to change up the resulting color of your lipstick.
