How to Get Rid of Dark Undereye Circles

So You Want to Get Rid of Dark Circles. . .

Everyone thinks they have dark circles, just like everyone wants shinier hair and stronger nails. As any makeup artist or dermatologist will tell you, we all have a certain amount of darkness under the eyes, but I still hear people insist that theirs are the worst. Here are some tips to prevent them:

  • Relax. Get enough sleep, drink plenty of water (and not alcohol), and visit an allergist if you suspect the problem isn't purely cosmetic. And if your under eye area is more important to you than snacks (I'm sort of on the fence about this one), try giving up salt.
  • Use cold cucumber slices, ice or a treatment like Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Eye Mask ($54) to bring down puffiness.
  • Dab a skin firming concealer under your eyes, like Clinique All About Eyes Concealer ($15.50). Beware of choosing a color that's too light, thinking it will brighten up the area. Concealer is meant to cover – match the shade to your forehead.
  • Curl your lashes and try a blue mascara, like Benefit Bad Gal Blue, which make the whites of the eyes appear whiter.
  • Draw attention away from your eyes with a sparkly lip gloss. Distraction!

The best thing I have EVER used to dark circles under my eyes (which are bad, I always have them no matter what) is Benefit Eye Bright. I swear by Eye Bright, its great in the morning and for touch ups as the day goes on. Fantastic stuff!

me too i get always dark circles, but after a really long quest for the perfect concealer i have found it, is the creamy concealer from Clinique, i think the trick is searching for the right color, that matches your skin.

I am very light-skinned with some nice inherited undereye circles. After all these years and TONS of different products, I finally found my match. I don't use foundation, and instead of concealer on the eyes, I use MAC panstick in the exact right shade and a REALLY good quality concealer brush. The panstick is less thick than concealer, but more so than foundation. It's fantastic and as a bonus, the stick is less expensive and lasts forever!

I recommend using an eye cream first, rc4480, as it will help smooth out any lines. Usually I recommend choosing an undereye concealer about one shade lighter than your natural skin tone, but if you aren't wearing foundation, try finding a shade as close to your natural skin as possible and blend, blend, blend! I hope this helps.

I have never had dark undereye circles...I don't know why, because everyone I know does. Even my sister does, and we're both very, very fair-skinned. But I've never had to wear undereye concealer a day in my life. I know I'm lucky, but I wonder why I don't ever get them...strange.

bella, here's a question for you. i never wear foundation, but i do have undereye dark circles at times that i would like to use concealer to cover. however, i find that concealer worn without foundation looks too obvious. any tips?

I have to agree that rest and everything does help, but its not always an option. As much as I hate to be a personal ad for any makeup, benefit has an under eye cream that is amazing for lightening circles and then their concealer for what the cream doesn't help with. Unfortunately the cream needs to be used morning and night and as soon as you stop they come right back, but I think its worth it to not look like I have 2 black eyes.

Getting enough sleep is the most difficult thing to do!!

I have dark circles under my eyes regardless of getting hours upon hours of sleep (and I'm not stressed out, either!) - it's just genetic unfortunately. I rely on benefit's erase paste + eye bright and some bronzer with my foundation to avoid the reverse panda eyes.

I used to never have undereye circles but have noticed them creeping up on me as I get older :-( Luckily, they're not puffy, just a little pinky-blue. Nothing that concealer can't fix!

Sleeping on a propped-up pillow also helps. I also learned that using a concealer that is opposite from your usual foundation shade might help too (I don't know how to explain it, but when I went to a MAC session last month, the MA recommended that I use an NW concealer instead of my usual NC concealer. Somehow the complimentary color helped to cancel out my dark circles, and now I usually use my regular concealer, with that NW concealer on top of it. Sorry to confuse all of you non-MAC-ers...)

I hate the cucumber tip. I put cut cucumbers on my eyes once and they burned! These tips are much better. I also know that if you're having a bad eye day, wearing your glasses instead of contacts helps kind of cover up/distract from them.

Concealer is great. But take it from someone whom had many sleepless night feeding twin. Rest is the best thing to prevent dark circles.
