How to Get a Sleek Ponytail

3 Quick, Easy Steps to a Sleek Ponytail

We're happy to present this hair how-to from our friends at Allure:

Ponytails — our style of choice this Summer — can range from practical and boring to gorgeous and chic. And the difference is as simple as a jar of wax. Celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Lea Michele, Eva Longoria, and Kim Kardashian have been kicking off the season with slick ponytails — they look polished and summery and are totally foolproof. Here's what you need to do:

  1. Stash a light-hold hair gel or pomade in your bag. Ones that are alcohol-free (or even have alcohol listed near the end of an ingredient list) will make your hair look shiny and sleek, not stiff. In a pinch, you can also use a lightweight body lotion, hand cream, or even sunscreen to hide frizz and slick back your hair.
  2. Rub the product between your palms, and then slick your hair straight back, securing with an elastic just below the crown. (When you're pulling your hair back, make sure to run your palms up over the hair at the nape of the neck, which tends to really frizz.)
  3. Don't worry too much about frizz on the ponytail. The double texture can actually look cool.

I learned a great trick for baby hairs around the face--spray hairspray on a toothbrush and comb them back. Works like a charm and looks totally natural!
