A Victoria's Secret Model Colorist Reveals the Secret to Sexy Brunette Hair

Blondes may have more fun, but if the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show runway is any indication, brunettes have all the sex appeal. You're not imagining things: there was a brunette majority on this year's catwalk, with about 65 percent of the models rocking darker strands. Considering that naturally flaxen beauties make up only 2 percent of the world's population, we're excited to see that chocolate-haired goddesses are seemingly embracing their roots.

Two of the most glorious brunettes of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Irina Shayk and Barbara Fialho, sought the expertise of celebrity colorist Shah Karegar before they hit the runway. According to Karegar, keeping your brunette hair sexy is simple (and completely free).

"Try not to shampoo it more than twice a week," Karegar advised via email, regarding natural and color-treated hair. "The reason why a lot of brunettes get mousy is because their hair is dehydrated, whether it's [from] the sun or being shampooed quite often." He also recommended hydrating it "as much as possible" each week with a high-quality conditioner. (Try DIYing your hair own mask with coconut oil with one of our recipes.)

Karegar shared that it's critical to avoid overprocessing the hair of his model clients. This is because styling and traveling can result in major stress on hair. Combining that with the damage of coloring can result in brittle and decidedly unsexy strands. To keep hair strong, he uses Uberliss's Bond Treatment when coloring and lifting. This professional product reduces hair porosity, thus preventing breakage and damage.

Barbara Fialho

"Barbara Fialho has been rocking the natural brunette look for many years during her modeling career, but this year I wanted to do something different and striking. I wanted the color to make a statement, therefore I decided to balayage her and blond her up. Barbara works and travels a lot, [so] sometimes her hair can get really dry from all the styling and also the water changes in different countries. Therefore I try not to process her hair even more with color and highlights."

Karegar mixed bleach, then added 1/8 of an ounce of the Uberliss Bond Regenerator in to protect Barbara's hair. (This formula creates new bonds in damaged and color-treated hair fibers.) He hand-painted this mixture to sections that he wanted to lighten — including those stunning face-framing pieces — and used heat for approximately 10 minutes. He finished by shampooing her hair with the Uberliss Bond Shampoo and 20 minutes of the Bond Amplifier.

Irina Shayk

"Less is always more with her. I don't use any permanent colors on her hair; she loves rocking that all-natural look. However, I decided to run some lowlights using all vegetable colors and the Uberliss Bond Treatment to give her that striking brunette look by adding dark dimension for the Victoria's Secret Show."

After mixing the vegetable color gloss, he added 1/8 of an ounce of Uberliss's Bond Regenerator into it then left it on Irina for 15 minutes. He finished with a clear shine, Uberliss Bond Shampoo, and 20 minutes of the Bond Amplifier.
