How Much Does Your Salon's Appearance Affect You?

How Much Does Your Salon's Appearance Affect You?

Lately I've been seeing descriptions of new salons that emphasize their design elements over the services offered; you'll find out who the architect is before you'll ever know whether they offer manicures. I'm not quite sure why this is happening — maybe with the economy down, salons are looking for ways to distinguish themselves — but it got me thinking: Are you willing to pay extra for a blow-out in that Frank Gehry-designed atrium or to sit in an Eames chair? I like a beautifully curated environment as much as the next person, but if a stylist is good, I'd be happy to get my hair cut in a back alley. Is that just me, though? Is going someplace nicer worth a little extra to you?

As a stylist myself, i have noticed that it doesnt matter where you go as long as the stylist gets the right things done to your hair... but it is always nice to have a nice enviroment around you... my clients like my area becuase it quiet and peaceful... and they have a place all to themselves...

Nope. I've been with the same stylist for almost 10 years, and her shop is nothing fancy and I totally don't care. It's not dingy and yucky (I'm a germaphobe, so that wouldn't do) it's just very quaint and cute. She owns it with one other cosmetologist and they keep it clean and comfortable for their clients (and they do a great business, so people definitely are like it) without fancy frills. They always offer you a coffee or tea, and have all the best mags though :) My stylist is great at cutting and amazing with color - she is always doing continuing education and understands all the latest and greatest techniques, and that's what is important to me. As a bonus, they have low overhead at their little shop so they're prices are awesome!

My cousin does hair out of her home, so there are usually some toys and a baby cousin around. Another hairstylist I went to had a salon in a flooring store...

I had bounced around to a lot of smaller salons that were cheaper and never found one I really liked. My co workers sent me to a high end salon for my birthday one year and the whole experience was amazing. From the glass of wine they offer me upon arrival to the massaging I get before and after my color treatment and then to top all that off I get a great cut and color. When you are a working mother and don't have a lot of down time this sort of thing is worth it!!!

if a place is run down and gross, i'm not as likely to try it in the first place, but if i know my stylist already and love the results, i would prefer to pay less and see her in her living room than to pay extra to sit in a luxe chair

My hair stylist has her own small shop, nothing fancy but great color and haircuts so that doesn't bother me. If I'm going for the spa treatments, I like a nice decor for the relaxing factor.

I've been with the same stylist for 7 years. She was at a place that I personally thought seemed a little run down. I'm sure it was quite awesome back in the early 90's but purple and turqoise no longer make for a fabulous interior/exterior. But she does amazing hair so I stuck it out. Then 2 years ago she opened her own salon in an old victorian home and made it super lux inside. I have to say I'm a lot more comfortable in this environment than the former rundown one. And she still does awesome hair ;-)
