You Need to Try Metallic Lipstick For Your Next Night Out

As members of the industry, we're the first to admit that many of the looks gracing Fashion Week's runways can often be too bold for the everyday woman. Take, for example, the metallic lipstick at Rodarte Fall 2014. Lead makeup artist James Kaliardos covered the lips in an iridescent metallic plum shade. The finish was gorgeous, yes, but not what we'd wear on the regular. To bring the look down a notch, we caught up with Janice Daoud, the NARS lead makeup stylist who worked backstage with Kaliardos at Rodarte.

Daoud suggests making your own metallic shade when first trying the trend. "Grab your favorite lipstick — your staple, never-fails-you shade — and add a frosted, metallic-like lip gloss on top of it. This way, you'll feel comfortable wearing this trend." Keep the look more subtle by sticking to shades that match one another. "For instance, for the Rodarte look, we used a pinkish-brown lipstick topped with a golden-brown gloss," says Daoud. "In doing so, you're making a lip statement but not an overpowering one."

The rest of the makeup should be soft and fresh, keeping the focus directly on the lips. For the more daring, add metallic liner. "[Applying] a thinly-lined metallic eyeliner, such as NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Via Appia ($24), along the upper lash line will tie the entire look together and make your eyes stand out."
