Wedding Cake Crowns Are the New Bridal Fashion Week Fad on the Runway

You can now have your wedding cake and wear it, too! At the Ines Di Santo Fall 2017 Bridal Fashion Week show, the designer sent headbands topped with wedding desserts — cake, cookies, doughnuts — down the runway. It looked like a Mad Hatter tea party, with the cake crowns adding a bit of whimsy to her gorgeous, frothy gowns.

Christy Doramus, the founder of Crowns by Christy, created the festive hair accessories.

"The designer and stylist for the show planned a French patisserie theme as the background of the show, so the headpieces were designed to bring that to life in wearable form during the finale," Doramus told POPSUGAR via email.

She also explained how these statement-making pieces were crafted: "The headpieces are made on headbands which were wrapped with velvet ribbon in pastel colors such as lavender, ice blue, and soft pink. The headbands were then topped off with faux desserts in different shapes and sizes, making each headpiece unique. The desserts were crafted from faux icing and materials by expert dessert designers."

Though we are obsessed with the cake crowns, we needed to know how to pull it off IRL. (They look a bit like life-size emojis.) "Aside from finishing off your Halloween costume with faux dessert headpieces, these would also be fun for the guest of honor at a bridal or baby shower," Doramus explained. "She can wear it as a fun accessory. I actually made a headpiece with dessert and flowers for the gorgeous Annie Atkinson of She's In The Glow."

We agree that a bridal shower is definitely the right environment for these accessories, rather than a more formal wedding. That said, adventurous brides should go for it!

L'anza Global Creative Director Matt Swinney was responsible for the chic updos. "This season, Ines' gowns were absolutely stunning," Swinney said in a press release. "So fresh and youthful, with a mood reminiscent of the glories of Paris street life and visions of afternoons at the patisserie. As I looked at the designs, I immediately thought of a young Audrey Hepburn today."

The makeup look featured a monochromatic light-purple eye and lip. It pulled colors from the head crowns.
