Katie Holmes may be one of the most glamorous, famous women in Hollywood. But when you meet the actress who has been in the game since her days as Joey Potter on Dawson's Creek, it's easy to forget that she's a mega movie star and not just someone's really cool, savvy mom (well, Suri Cruise's mom, but still). Then, she flashes you her megawatt big-screen smile, and you're reminded that she is, indeed, royalty.

The Alterna hair care ambassadoror sat down with us exclusively before meeting with an intimate group of editors for milk and cookies (she admitted that the baked treats are one of her guilty pleasures). And yes, she ate two cookies, proving she's just naturally that thin and gorgeous. She was curled up on a couch in jeans, a cozy gray sweater, and chic black leather boots with her hair worn down in a voluminous yet sleek blowout. The only flashy thing about her appearance was a metallic gold manicure (she believes it was an Essie color). We chatted with Katie about the products she uses to grow her luscious locks long, how she plans to change up her makeup for Halloween, and why the normcore trend is perfect for Fall.

POPSUGAR: You’ve worn so many hairstyles through the years: bangs, bobs, long hair, etc. Which one has been your favorite?

Katie Holmes: I love having long hair because of the versatility. And what I love about Alterna’s Caviar shampoo and conditioner is it’s really healthy for your hair and it’s paraben-free — you’re constantly nourishing your hair so that you can grow it long. There’s also the Alterna Caviar Repair Lengthening Hair & Scalp Elixir ($38), which prevents split ends to help to grow it out, too. I prefer it long.

PS: Do you have a favorite updo or style to wear when it’s long?

KH: I love a topknot.

PS: What are three products that you always keep on you when you travel? Hair, makeup, or skin.

KH: I always keep Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil ($25) in my purse because it prevents the frizz. [I also bring] Olay hydrating moisturizer. I moisturize before I take off and when I land from the flight. And then I usually have a good granola bar. I just got a bunch of Annie’s chocolate chip granola bars. I also Orbit sugar-free gum in spearmint.

PS: Are you going to celebrate Halloween this year?

KH: I am! I’m going to increase the color palette. I don’t know, I have to talk to Dotti
about my makeup for Halloween.

PS: Are you planning on dressing up?

KH: Maybe! I never decide until the last minute. But I’m gonna find some homemade candy bars and wrap them in ribbon.

PS: Would you ever launch a lifestyle site to share your own DIYs?

KH: Probably not — I’m not that organized!

PS: Do you play on Pinterest?

KH: My sister is on Pinterest, and I love going on Pinterest for ideas. I don’t pin, I look for inspiration. I love going on for Holiday party ideas — things like that.

PS: So you’re playing Jackie O for The Kennedys TV series on ReelzChannel. What’s it like to take on this iconic role?

KH: I’m very excited. I’ve played her once before, and this time we’re going to tell the story of her life after JFK and Bobby were assassinated . . . [it’s about] her coming into her own up until the death of JFK Jr. I’m excited. She was an amazing woman.

PS: Jackie O had amazing style, but nowadays, one of the biggest trends is the idea of being “basic” and “normcore.” What are thoughts about that?

KH: I love it! I think it’s a good time for it, it feels very Americana, especially in the Fall when it’s fun to go to high school football games.
