Lucy Boynton and Her Fabulous Glam Team Win Our Pick For the Red Carpet Beauty Icon Award

Award seasons come and go, and while everyone looks stunning on the carpet, rarely do stars experiment with playful, avant-garde looks at the level Lucy Boynton has this year. The actress, who appears in Bohemian Rhapsody alongside her recently confirmed boyfriend, Rami Malek, stunned in several retro looks at the beginning of the season that had us feeling like we were watching a scene straight out of Valley of the Dolls or like she had just left a gig. (We're getting major Debbie Harry vibes, too.)

As more events came and went, we saw Boynton develop into a full-fledged beauty star, showing off everything from Ziggy Stardust-inspired eyeliner to looks inspired by caution tape — and it was all mesmerizing. Boynton's willingness to venture past traditional red carpet looks is obviously a huge part of it, but we'd be remiss not to attribute these standout styles to her glam team, specifically makeup artist Jo Baker. Baker shows off Boynton's looks on her Instagram and includes inspiration behind each look: custard, power lines, birds — nothing is off limits when it comes to developing a makeup theme for the actress.

Her blond bob was mostly styled (and cut!) by artist Jenny Cho, who also took a lot of artistic liberties. Braids, embellishments, bows — Cho proved short hair doesn't have to miss out on lively styles.

We love a bit of whimsy and a well-implemented theme, and seeing these looks on a red carpet only makes our job more fun. Check out the gallery for some of our favorite looks. And congrats to Boynton, Baker, and Cho for pulling together true works of art.

Every year, award season opens with the Palm Springs Film Festival. Makeup artist Jo Baker was inspired by "'80s pink sweets," she said, like "pink wafers and powder pink blancmange." Despite the '80s reference, we are fully convinced Boynton could take on the 1967 classic Valley of the Dolls with ease.

Seriously, these lashes. (And they're real!)

Leaning into the Bohemian Rhapsody theme, Boynton looks like she could perform at the Grammys — and win a few, too. Makeup artist Jo Baker said this look was inspired by — no shock here — the '70s, by creating a "Bianca Jagger-, Jerry Hall-inspired luxe glamour" vibe. Baker also posted on her Instagram that the shape of the shadow was inspired by goth catherdrals and the arches of old churches. She created the look using Chanel.

Paired with Baker again, Boynton sports a gorgeous firework-inspired metallic eye at the Online Film Critics Society Award Ceremony.

Baker said she was inspired by the late David Bowie's glam alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The eye makeup complemented her Prada gown perfectly.

Boynton kept her makeup rather minimal for the Critics' Choice Awards, but that didn't stop Cho from pulling some magic out. Her bob was coiffed with two halo braids, with a stunning starry-knight inspired hair piece by Jennifer Behr.

Not to detract from the hair or gown, the subdued makeup was created by artist Kate Lee for Chanel.

Boynton wore her hair in tousled saves with a green and silver smoky eye, but her lashes still managed to take center stage. Artist Alexis Day used Shiseido to create the look with stylist Halley Brisker on hair.

Baker went with a precise cut-crease liner, saying the inspiration was Boynton's polka-dot Erdem dress. The vibe? Simple vamp goth, power lines, and the punk era.

Boynton's look for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival was inspired by "medieval geisha feelings," according to Baker. She applied a coat of pink mascara to Boynton's bottom lashes and extended her shadow to her temples and paired it with a matte red lip for "color contrast." She mentions an influence of pink custard and sponge cake, which was served on rainy days while she was in grade school in England, as well as the English telephone vestibules.

We can't pinpoint the exact event Boynton was headed to for this look, but nonetheless we're obsessed with the "sharp ink" liner Baker created for her.

"Nature shows us . . . stand out or go unnoticed! Be bold, be brave," said Baker. The liner is Bauhaus-inspired, as well as by "fancy chickens and birds." Birds might not be considered vicious, but Baker mentioned that's how she was feeling when creating the sharp, severe liner.

For the Rodarte runway show in Southern California, Baker was inspired by California sunsets and "creamy sherbet candy tones." The peachy shadow was chosen to complement her dress. Cho gave her bob texture, which kept the look from being too precious.

Eighties drama and "power dressing" were the mood for this look, according to Baker. She decorated the eye with shades of mauves and an antique gold. Brisker pinned the top of her hair back with black barrettes and gave the ends of her hair a flouncy, turned-out finish.

Baker describes the shape of the shadow as a "snapper tail flare."

Yellow shadow can sit heavily in the danger zone for most, but Baker pulls this eye together seamlessly. In what she calls "Twiggy meets Kill Bill," she designed a graphic cut crease with liner and accentuated the bottom lashes as well.

Cho created a french twist on Boynton's bob that was inspired by the '60s, but she pulled out pieces to make it look more relaxed.

Baker wanted the "caution cat eye" to create drama and a sense of danger. Her tip when going with a bold eye like this? "When eyes take center stage, it's important to keep skin and lips minimal."

"Old Hollywood '50s feelings," is how Baker describes this look. Inspired by a housewife during that era, she also mentions an undercover agent as the motive behind this powder blue dream.
