Lush Employees Wear Oil Barrels to Protest Tar Sands

Lush Wants Oil Companies to Clean Up Their Act

While the world focuses on the ever-more-upsetting Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Gulf isn't the only place where oil exploration is harming the environment. In Canada, the effects of crude oil production in Alberta's tar sands are pretty ugly. The process is destroying the world's largest intact forest, creating enormous bird-killing toxic waste ponds, and increasing air pollution and may be linked to a much-higher-than-average cancer rate in the local First Nations community.

To raise awareness of the issue, Lush is donating all proceeds from its new Wild Rose Country bath bomb ($5.95) to Rainforest Action Network in support of its tar sands campaign. Inspired by Alberta's provincial flower, the bergamot- and rose-scented fizzer was the focus of events held yesterday at 103 Lush stores. Employees volunteered to strip down to nothing but oil barrels, handing out leaflets to encourage customers to take action against the controversial oil production. (And yes, guys joined in, too.) Today, the clothes are back on, but the bath bomb is available everywhere — so consider treating yourself to a bath while contributing to a very good cause.

I've always liked that company. I may have to wonder past a location to get some stuff for my Mum.

Also, if I am correct, drilling in those areas produces four times more CO2 than regular drilling. Glad that they're paying attention to other companies' tactics as well
