Matthew Williamson and Benefit Cosmetics Palette

Matthew Williamson Designs a Glam Disco Palette For Benefit Cosmetics

British designer Matthew Williamson is bringing his eye for color and bohemian prints to a Benefit Cosmetics makeup palette. "My inspiration for the palette is nostalgic to the late '70s and early '80s, glamorous cocktail parties, and hedonistic discos," Williamson said. The Rich Is Back! Makeup Kit ($34, available Summer 2013) is wrapped in gorgeous, colorful, and energetic prints, and it opens up to a bronzed eye palette with a shock of turquoise, glossy red lip color, blush, and lash-plumping mascara. To get a sneak peek at his mood board and more from behind the scenes, just keep reading.

Williamson worked closely with Benefit to come up with all the limited-edition makeup shades in the palette. You can see his mood board above, which helped him create a look with "the allure of the stylish, iconic women that frequented exclusive nightclubs such as Studio 54 in that era," he said. "Bianca Jagger, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Hall, but with a younger, more playful sensibility."

As you can see from the sketch above, Williamson wanted to incorporate his iconic prints, including rainbow leopard, burst print, and peacock. "The packaging [features] a similar palette, but updating the luxe colorblocking in a contemporary graphic way, keeping highlights of metallics for high impact," he explained. "Alluding to a spirit of luxury and opulence and a style that never goes out of fashion. This is high-octane, glam makeup for dressing up and dancing the night away."
