Maybelline Sponsors New York Fashion Week

Maybe It's Fashion Week . . . Maybe It's Maybelline

This September, New York Fashion Week's cosmetic sponsor will not, as it was last year, be MAC. Instead, the tents will be sponsored by the much less expensive and considerably less edgy Maybelline brand. Will it be a new beginning or a big letdown? To hear the whole story and weigh in, just keep reading.. I love plenty of Maybelline products (my first foundation was Maybelline, and I can still vividly remember its texture and scent), but I have to say that it's a shakeup for Fashion Week's general image of high-end inaccessibility. And that might not be a bad thing. Maybe the world of high fashion is changing, opening up to the rest of us — between America's Next Top Model and Project Runway, we're all a lot better educated about the fashionable realm, and hot young makeup artists and designers are constantly being enlisted by the likes of Target and H&M to put out capsule collections that could pass for runway designs.

Then again, not everyone wants fashion to be so accessible. I'd be really excited about this turn of events if I didn't worry that the older, more-established designers were going to turn up their noses at the new sponsor. Some fashion houses have very little respect for anyone who's not as expensive and design driven as they are. (Of course, as ever, other cosmetic brands will sponsor certain individual shows.) So what do you think: Is this a sign of new, more accessible times for Fashion Week? Or, will the fashion crowd turn up its collective nose at a drugstore brand? I'm really curious to know what you all are thinking about this one, so tell me in the comments.

Maybelline does make some okay products but I don't know about this.I think I'm the only one who hates fashion week makeup anyway. It totally doesn't transfer to real life. Why would you want to look like a corpse?

I don't know how people CAN'T love Maybelline. I love their mineral line and swear by their mascaras. In my experience their products have been more amazing then the top notch drug store brands. (I've seen Revlon dribble off my face within a matter of minutes and I'm allergic to just about everything L'Oreal.)I think it's fantastic that Maybelline have stepped in and sponsored this event. It makes it more accessible to people who can't afford designer products. Pretty much everything in my makeup bag was bought from their collection.

I haven't really considered MAC that edgey lately either... They release the same shades over and over. Maybe Illamasqua will be it next year. Now that is an edgey brand.

I know we're in a down economy, but this is just depressing!

but also, Pat McGrath has a creative hand in developing products for Cover Girl. i've read that she does and actually guinea pigs their new products that she helps formulate during fashion week shows.

the dream liquid mousse foundation is great and Great Lash is one of the best selling mascaras of all time, but make up artists have such a vast array of products by different companies in their arsenal that i'm sure they won't be exclusively using just maybelline.

They, like other cosmetic companies I'm sure will make colors and products that never hit the retail market, they will be runway exclusive. But it will help them boost sales of their other products.

Like others are saying, Maybeline is not one of the good Drug Store brands. Although they might pull off some good make-up by using great make-up artists who'll have to alter the products or use their make-up tricks to make the product look good; in reality their make-up lacks pigment, and staying power. Like Bella said, i'd be excited about an accessible fashion forward product joining fashion week, however an accessible product line that works well would be better. If they had a make-up line that worked like MAC with the price of Maybeline and wanted them to sponsor, i'd be all over it!!!!

Fear not Bella & sugar readers! Maybelline has some FANTASTIC products - including their Liquid Dream Mouse foundation and the Full & Soft Mascara. I'm a fan of their gloss & lipstick as well. When left in the hands of make up pro's like the divine Pat McGrath, I'm sure they are going to wow us as usual with some edgy-not-doable-in-the-real-world looks.

laaame...should've stuck with MAC, no one's going to like it, Maybelline's products aren't even some of the better drugstore products. Wonder how much Maybelline had to fork out to get this deal? Also I wonder what these famous designer makeup artists are going to do when the crappy Maybelline eye shadow is literally not showing up on models' skin! smh

At least it's not Cover Girl. If Maybelline can come out with some products that have better color pay off. Then this might be ok. But with their current stuff, it will be a disaster.
