Is the 'Miracle Serum' Worth the Hype?

Is the 'Miracle Serum' Worth the Hype?

Good luck trying to find Boots No7 Restore & Renew serum at your local drugstore. Both Target and CVS stock the cult beauty item—in theory. It's been sold out everywhere, but if you happen to be in New York City, tomorrow's your lucky day. One CVS in Manhattan, at 630 Lexington Avenue, will have a shipment of the $21.99 serum, but customers will be able to buy only one bottle.

The hubbub over Restore & Renew is that scientists have proven that it has a similar effect to Tretinoin, which is the effective ingredient in Retin-A. That's excellent for an over-the-counter product, but I can't help but think that if you have health insurance, actually getting a prescription for Retin-A might cost just a few dollars more (and you wouldn't have wait in a long line to get it). Then again, if you don't have insurance, or if Retin-A makes you peel like crazy, Restore & Renew would be a pretty good deal. Either way, I want to try the Boots serum—but I'll wait until the frenzy has died down. What do you think? Is this hype justified? (For a guide that explains what serums are, click here.)

I got mine from my local Boots store, but have had to stop using it every day as I have no lines left in my face and look like I've been Botoxed, so every other evening before bed I put it on using an anti-ageing moisturiser so my skin doesn't dry up. It is really good.

I think this is called 'Protect and Perfect' here in the UK. Can anyone confirm this? I'm thinking of getting some but I just want to make sure. It seems like the same thing, and they're talking about stock levels on the website, so maybe it is? it's in the same range as the 'Refine and Rewind' one.

GeriAnne, go to their website to see where its available near you. Not all CVS' are carrying Boots at the moment, but it looks like all the Targets are. http://bootsus.bri-global.com/ While you are at it, you can do the skin analysis, and that will show you what products will work best for your skin type. HTH!

Dantana you're thinking of Accutane which is a pill that messes with the hormones, but is good for cystic acne. It can cause birth defencts to you usually have to be on birth control as well. I went into CVS in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (I hate it here :( ) and they don't carry ANY boots products. Anyone know what is up with that?? I'll maybe check Target, but who knows?

I was lucky enough to find the Restore and Renew at one of my local Target stores a couple of weeks ago. I've only used it a short while, but I swear I've noticed a change in my skin already! It seems smoother, and some of the fine lines seem less noticible. I've been using some of the other Boots products too (cleaner, toner, moisturizer), and I've been very impressed with all of them. I've been spending a fortune on skin care products lately, so if this continues to work so well in the weeks ahead, I'll be so happy, as the price is very reasonable!

I'm sort of confused here...is Retin-A something that is bad for teenagers to use, because it messes with the ovaries? So would this product be safe to use for a teenager?

Another reason why living in Canada rocks. I walked into my local Shopper's Drug Mart and picked up a bottle two weeks ago. No line-ups, no waiting. And while they say it takes a month to see results, I have already seen an improvement in my skin. What a beautiful-feeling serum this is, too. It feels just divine gliding onto my skin. I would recommend this to anyone.

I will be looking for this the next time I'm out at target. I guess this shows how important we view ourselves when it comes to looks. hahah

I agree with PGQ, this stuff does work! I did have an issue with breakouts for the first couple of weeks, my skin is super sensitive, but now my pores look smaller and the fine lines underneath my eyes are gone. I bought extra and sold it on eBay (NOT, as another user assumed on a previous post, for profit, as I sold it for what I paid for it...)so if you are having a hard time finding it you might check out the auctions. While I originally intended to use all I bought, I found out after the fact that Restore & Renew is for all you younger folks, and that Refine and Rewind is for those of us who want the same results but with a firming action, too. I've used Refine and Rewind for about two weeks now and I do not really see any firming going on. It does work the same on the lines and skin tone, it costs the same as Restore & Renew and is a bit easier to find. All in all, I think the hype is warranted. I've seen better results with this than any other product I've used, including that ridiculously priced Strivectin!

My mom has a prescription for Retin A for acne and it is ridiculously expensive! Most health insurances will not cover the cost because they say it can be used for wrinkles and is therefore a beauty product not a medical one. I think it typically runs about $500 a tube. So if this stuff is anything like it, I'd say this is a way better deal!

I'm a Boots fanatic for over 25 years. I've tried high end lines, and always wind up going back to my trusty Boots for best results. I picked up some Restore and Renew serum whilst on a visit to London this past February and have been using it faithfully ever since. My skin looks amazing! I have super dry skin, so the prescription formulas are not something I would consider. R&R has lessened the look of deep lines under my eyes (I've had them since my early 20's due to itchies from allergies, as well as being a chronic migraine sufferer who rubs her eyes at the first sign of pain) and I have gotten so many unsolicited compliments from people thinking I've had "work" done! The other effect I have noticed is that my skin retains moisture better and I use less moisturizer. So, yes, I think its worth the hype and I keep an extra stocked at all times so I'll never run out! I'm thrilled that we can finally purchase select Boots products here in the US and hope they plan to bring over more and more of that Boots goodness! (What they carry here at Target and CVS is just a smidgen of what they have a available in the UK -- one of my fav products is their Oil of Evening Primrose moisturizer, there is nothing like it! I better stop... I could go on and on about my precious Boots...)
