Natural Cures For Under-Eye Circles

Under-Eye Options, Part 4: The Homemade Helpers

There are all kinds of folk "cures" for under-eye circles, ranging from the bizarre to the brilliant. Since I'm on a quest to cover up my circles once and for all, I decided to try out some of the homemade remedies out there and report on the ones that actually work. To find out which DIY solutions actually do an under eye good, just read more..

Raw potato The traditional way to use raw potato is to place a couple of cool or room temperature slices under your eyes. I've tried this a few times, and it does work, although it's certainly not permanent. But if you're about to go on a date and your circles are particularly noticeable, it's well worth putting these on.

Phenylephrine This drugstore sinus medicine is also a vasoconstrictor, meaning that it makes your blood vessels smaller. Taking a pill and then crushing up a couple more and applying them under your eyes as a poultice definitely makes the veins smaller, so if your circles are only caused by large, visible under-eye blood vessels, this is a good quick fix. Again, it only lasts a few hours, but for a big event that's really all you need.

Tea bags These are mostly a de-puffer, but when they're warm they also speed up circulation. That can help the vessels under your eyes move oxygen-starved, purple-blue blood out from under your eyes a little faster. If you're a big antioxidant believer, tea has the added benefit of being chock-full of them.

I actually liked using tea bags, but now I'm curious to try the potato solution. I really hope it works for me because under-eye creams are either too pricey or just don't work.

I once heard that makeup artists use "hemorrhoid cream" on stars for a quick undereye fix and I went out and bought some Preparation H and applied it under my eyes. I don't recommend it! It stinks, it's greasy, and it didn't do too much other than make my eyes water.

another good quick fix for puffy eyes is the old spoon in the freezer trick. just leave a spoon in the freezer for about 30 seconds, then place on your eye for 10 secs or so, and voila puffiness is gone
