Oscars Makeup Sneak Peek

Bruce Grayson Gives Us an Oscars Sneak Peek

Bruce Grayson is a busy man. As head makeup artist for the Oscars, he's currently putting the finishing touches on everything to guarantee a smooth and beautiful show this Sunday. He's dishing on everything from how he handles teary post-acceptance puffy eyes to what makeup shades the stars will be wearing. So to get a sneak peek at what you can expect Sunday night, just keep reading.

People sweat a lot under the lights, so how do you fix them up for a quick turnaround?
That's when you have the glam team sitting there offstage with a ton of products to help them get back together. It's amazing to watch if you've never seen it. There are three people, a stylist, a makeup artists, and a hairdresser, all working together like the arms of a tarantula to get in there and clean them up, to stop their sweating, to re-place foundation, to recurl eyelashes — all in about 40 seconds flat.

What's the most common Oscars makeup emergency?

At the Oscars, when women come off stage sometimes their eyes are a mess, and they look puffy because they're crying. I recently started using Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller as a quick treatment under the eyes, because in 30 seconds it reduces puffiness and makes their eyes look brighter. Then I re-place concealer and eye shadow. So I carry multiple products with me: something for the eyes, something for the lips, something for the face, and Kleenex.

Will any looks from Fashion Week be making an appearance at the Oscars?
People are going to put their lips forward and have softer eyes, and obviously a very beautiful complexion. The shade I love best is Vegas Volt by MAC; it's gorgeous. Put a little clear MAC Lipglass on top to set it, and you're done. I also like the softer, pinky corals that you'd match up with a smoky eye. The soft coral colors make lips look fuller in appearance, so you get multiple benefits — great color and lips that look fuller. And red lips. Red is always a great color, but now they're using more coral-y reds than blue reds. Blue reds only go on certain complexions anyway, so I like the new trend.

There's also this new translucency to smoky eyes — you're going to see sheerer eye colors so that you can almost see the eyelid instead of it being completely darkened out.

Smoky eyes can be notoriously difficult. Any advice?
They are hard! Placement is everything. And I see people get too dark, and then to correct they go even darker, which just doesn't work. Right now, we're seeing a lot of translucency in smoky eyes; I'm really liking CoverGirl ShadowBlast, because I swear to god, it makes doing smoky eyes so easy. There's one applicator for the lids, and you just roll it on there, then you use the other applicator for the crease and the liner. You just smudge with a Q-Tip, or if it gets too heavy remove it with a Q-Tip. They're so easy, they're so movable. I wish I'd had them when I was studying makeup.
