Would You Ever Get a Perm?

Perms get such a bad rap just because grandmas love them and they were a staple ingredient of '80s hair. Despite the fact that I know how useful they can be, and how many different kinds of perms there are, I might almost be hesitant to tell people if I got one, just for fear that they'd start laughing before I could explain. What's your opinion on the whole thing? Has the perm just gotten too much negative press to make a comeback? Do you even consider it an option? Or are you permed and proud?

I had a perm when I was in 8th grade (in the early 90s of course!) Even though many of my friends had one at the time, I hadn't initially wanted one but my mom gave me highlights and I didn't like the way they looked, so we decided to do a perm to disguise the streaks. I liked it ok, but then after a year or so, I was like "why isn't this perm growing OUT?" Turns out that right around puberty my hair up and decided to go wavy-curly! The perm finally did grow out, so my hair's not super-curly anymore, but it will go into ringlets when its a longer length, if I use a diffuser. Never would've imagined that could happen when I was 13!

I would like to get loose waves but I'm kinda obsessed with the 80's and think the crazy perms back then were fun

I had one for a whole year when I was ten. I hated it as they had to do the perm process twice as my hair couldn't hold the curl with just one perm process. It fried my hair like nothing else I've ever done with it! Never. Ever. Again.

Because of the bad connotations with the word "perm", it's now called "texturizing" which gives the wavy look more than the tight curly aka perm look. I've gotten it and plan to do it again.

It's not for me, they remind me of 1990s housewives.

I've had my share of perms when I was in high school. The last one didn't really hold, so I stopped trying to force my hair to be curly and I haven't gotten another perm since, that was 10 years ago. I don't plan to start again anytime soon either.

Got permed once, but my hair didn't hold it well at all, won't get one again.

I got perms when I was in middle school. Probably wouldn't do it again, but never say never

I have only recently considered getting a perm. I've been planning on permanently dying my hair red (its ashy blonde now, and I'm due for a change) and i think it would look wonderful with a perm. However, i don't really know how perm science has changed. Is it like it was 15 years ago with the frizzy, tough to control do? Or can they actually create 1" ringlets all over my head that will look natural and not 'fro out?? I'd appreciate some more reliable modern perm info if you please :)

I would definitely go get a perm. my hair is "in the middle" -- not really super curly and not straight. I can't straighten it w/o a flat iron. A perm might give my hair more body @ the roots and so it won't be so flat..

I have naturally curly hair, but not as much as I would like, so I go about once a year and get a spiral perm, and it always looks amazing, and the curls hold longer because of the natural curls already there, and it also makes it look fuller.

Japanese perms, yes. American-style 80s perms, no thanks.

I was a competitive dancer when I was younger and I would get a perm 1-2 times a year. Perms help your hair hold styles longer. I stopped getting perms my freshmen year in high school. Now I'm 25 and I would really like to get another perm. Perm science and practice has come a long way and I know a few people with perms that you'd never know otherwise! My hair is pretty thick, straight on top, wavy underneath. I have to straighten it or dry it with a diffuser every other day. Otherwise it's a mess. I would love to get a perm to even out the textures. It would be so nice to throw some product in my hair and leave!

I had a perm when I was in middle school in early 90's. I had really tight ringlets, and I would not get that again. I could see doing looser curls. My hair is naturally wavy, but a perm would even it out.
