Good news! The alleged Peruvian gang that murders people and steals their fat may not be the gruesome reality it seemed when the story first came out last month. Now, Time is reporting that police involved in illegal activities — and perhaps even a government-run death squad — may have fabricated the story as a cover-up. Given the fact that random human fat is rarely if ever actually used in beauty treatments, this new angle makes sense, although it's no less sensational. I don't know which option is worse: a murderous gang that targets strangers for their fat, or a corrupt national police force that kills under the aegis of the government and then further insults its people with lies.
