Photographer Phillip Toledano has explored the aftereffects of bankruptcy and has even taken a behind-the-scenes look at phone sex operators, but perhaps some of his most thought-provoking work is his exploration of extreme cosmetic surgery. In his portrait series A New Kind of Beauty, Toledano raises the question as to what beauty really is, reiterating the theme that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. "Is beauty informed by contemporary culture? By history? Or is it defined by the surgeon's hand?" he asks. While the photos are of both men and women, the line tends to be blurred as alterations such as high cheekbones and plumped lips lend to the ambiguity. See Toledano's work below:
