I remember this album and I remember this video vividly: Vanessa Williams circa 1988, "The Right Stuff." Her face was flawless and right there at that moment I wanted to wear bold lipstick because I knew it was the answer to everything — at the very least it would certainly give me the right stuff, right? My fierce mother would be having none of the lipstick wearing until four years later when I was 16, and even today I remember my first tube of CoverGirl LipSlicks. It wasn't really lipstick per se; it was actually more of a lipstain/gloss hybrid, but I loved it! I remember being in New York with my family because my dad was running the marathon, and us going into a drugstore to get it. It was a big deal for me. I got the yellow tube, which was a bronzy lip color, and of course the red tube. Never forgetting Ms. Vanessa Williams in all her bright, puckered glory, I slathered it on rather heavily — like 10 coats heavily — trying to achieve that lipstick look. And as tacky as I may have looked (my mom tried to deter me to no avail), I am quite sure it at least lent some shape to the makeup artist/beauty Yoda I am today — just with a lot more style, a steadier hand, and most definitely: "The Right Stuff."
