Be Safe With Your Pedi, or You Could Regret It

Here's a horror story for you: After getting a pedicure, a St. Louis woman developed a foot infection. She developed small red bumps that mutated into boils — one of which was as big as a baseball. An oozing, gross baseball. Her woes were due to a mycobacterium infection that she picked up from the pedicure station. Even if salons look clean, the bacteria are too small for the human eye to see. You don't have to give up pedicures, but if you go to the nail salon, follow these tips:

  • Don't use the whirlpool foot bath. The jets are hard to clean, and bacteria thrive in their dark recesses. Choose a still foot bath instead.
  • Don't get a pedicure until 24 hours after you've shaved/waxed/Nair-ed your legs.
  • Don't get a pedicure if you have scratches, wounds, or bug bites on your feet or legs.
  • Be sure that the salon is properly accredited and licensed.
  • Consider bringing your own pedicure tools.

And, of course, you can always go the DIY route by doing your pedicure at home. That's what I did last night, with no risk of oozing sores. Shudder.

I have never paid to get my nails done, not even for my wedding i did them myself. Mani and Pedi are so easy to do and the ones done in salons chip the same way as the ones you can do. i have seen my share of toes infections among relatives and friends and only after that they stopped going to these places.

Suggestions are fine but it's more work than just doing it yourself, especially if you have your own tools - why not just do it yourself?

My grandmother actually had to have a toe amputated after a bad pedicure many years ago, and at one point, it seemed like she was going to lose the leg. Yes, she was old, and possibly couldn't fight infection as well as a younger person, and hopefully sterility has come a long way since then, but I still prefer to do my own!

That happened to one of my friends too! The pedicure-ist cut off too much of one of her cuticles and she got an awful infection-- she had to go to the ER the next morning and get steroids injected into her! Let's just say I will never go to that salon-- nor will anyone who knows her

I dont know what you mean Bella by whirlpool foot bath vs the still foot bath? Can you please put up pictures of each or something so I know that I'm using the safest one? Thanks !

i am very persnickety with my pedi's. it took me 5 tries to find the salon that would "put up" with my "demands". I have diabetes so i need the circulation stimulation, but i make sure they do not use cutting implements. also, i bring my own sanitation cocktail. First i make them turn the jets on and run the herbicide through, rinse and then run the bleach through the jets. It has gotten so they let me do it myself now. lol.

I've defintely felt the drama of infections from nail salons!! $1000 in antibiotics and doctors trips later, I'm almost on the mend. Luckily it didn't get nearly as bad as this poor woman in St. Louis, but definitely everyone should follow these tips!!

GROSS. Thank you for the suggestion, though. I never trust salons...no matter how clean they might look.
