She's Got the Look: A Step Forward, or Back?

She's Got the Look: A Step Forward, or Back?

Summertime always brings us a dose of reality TV shows. This week marks the debut of She's Got the Look, a modeling competition. (Yes, the theme song is by Roxette. Gross.) The concept is similar to Top Model, but the twist is that all of the contestants are 35 or older. The winner receives a contract with Wilhemina and a spread in Self magazine. And instead of Tyra and the Jays, the judges include Beverly Johnson and stylist Robert Verdi. Like any reality show, there's the requisite "people who don't have a chance in Hades" reel:

I'm conflicted about this show. If it's done well, it'll be a great reminder that women don't stop being attractive when they turn 35. But unlike the young Top Model contestants, these would-be models might have insecurities about their age — and one biting criticism could bring all of those out. Here's hoping that the show winds up being empowering. Will you tune in?

I think the show itself is kind of lame, in execution, BUT the very idea that a show like this could be greenlit is a very very good sign. Our perception of beauty is truly getting less standardized, and that's very exciting!

I won't be watching the show but I do think it's great. Women over 35 should get their props too.

I won't watch it because I don't think we get it in the UK, but I probably would otherwise.

I'm so over reality shows. I couldn't even get throught this entire video. That fifty year old woman looked amazing though! Beautiful skin.

I think it's sort of insulting- but then, I find most beauty and modeling competitions insulting. I think that reveling in one's personal beauty is a great thing- but making a competition of it is petty and rather catty. Some of these women are very lovely. I still won't be watching.

Oh lord, I remember that Roxette song...it was really popular when I was in junior high. Hate it. As for the show, I might check it out...probably won't watch regularly though, not really into those modeling shows anymore.

To answer your question, this is a step back.

I find the concept of looking good "for one's age" a bit insulting. That pretty much says, "Well you're not 25, which we consider the pennacle of beauty, but you're looking pretty decent as you slide down that hill." Either you look good or you don't, regardless of age. Also, Beverly Johnson has some evil in her. Couple that with ambition and coming along a little too soon for real black model superstardom (probably the source of the evil I see) and those women don't stand a chance. She NEEDS this, and if acting an ass is the quickest road to reality TV success she will surely take it.

I would love to watch this show since I'm a frustrated wanna-be model. And because I'm 40, I like to look at women who look younger than their age, fabulous and beautiful in their mature age.

Edit: the snarkitude displayed by the judges TO the women, not BY the women.

This seems *kind of* empowering....I didn't like the snarkitude in the womens' faces, but I'm also happy that Beverly Johnson is reminding people that women can be STUNNING at any age.

I don't do reality TV. Or any TV, really. It makes me cringe with shame and embarrassment. This looks pretty awful.

I think it's a great idea and I don't think the idea is who looks the youngest like the post above says. It's who looks good, no matter what her age. If they do a second season I will be sending in my application.

Oh, and She's Got the Look is now stuck in my head..Blah!

I think the woman who said she was 50 looks amazing! Actually, a lot of those women look amazing. If this show is done right, it could be empowering to middle aged women...Although, since it's a reality show I don't have very high hopes for it. I doubt I'll tune in for it.

does it bother anyone else that the entire point of this show is to see who looks the youngest? how about the criteria be who looks the most beautiful FOR HER AGE not who does the best job looking like a twenty five year old. ugh.

I didn't like the outward criticism to the contestants. I don't recall ANTM ever doing that during the cattle call portion, unless they felt the girl was making fun or crossing the line in some way.
