Green beauty guru Shiva Rose shares her top product picks in this tip-filled post from Allure.
If you’re into holistic living, actress Shiva Rose might just be your ultimate girl crush. Covetable cool-girl style? Yep. Homegrown produce? Check. All-natural perfume blending parties with perfumer Mandy Aftel? Of course. I asked the mother of two (with ex-husband Dylan McDermott), who blogs at thelocalrose.com, to share her favorite green beauty products in the hopes that her green thumb (and beauty regimen) might rub off on me. Get Shiva's tips when you read more.
Why did you go green?
"I have always been into green living. Even as a child, I was always asking how we could keep the planet clean and pure. After I had my first daughter in my early 20s, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, and this health scare got me even more on the path to green living. More and more people are realizing that what we eat and put on our skin will affect our health in some way. Forty-one percent of Americans will get cancer in their lifetimes. That statistic is enough to get me motivated to eat organic foods and use beauty products without harmful chemicals. I started my site to show how fashion and beauty can be both natural and glamorous."
What's your daily beauty routine like?
"When I wake up in the morning, I like to spray my face with Tata Harper's Hydrating Floral Spray. It smells so good and wakes me up. I then like to apply Zelens Triple-Action Eye Cream because it helps with puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. I put on a day cream or oil — lately, I've been obsessed with RMS Beauty Oil because it's light and smells divine. After that, some Grahams SunClear sunblock if I plan on being outdoors. On casual days, I apply RMS Concealer, Tarte Cheek Blush, and a little tinted lip gloss by RMS. Sometimes I'll use a MAC lip liner with gloss over it for some color."
What about if you'll be on camera — or for a big night out?
"If I'm planning to be on camera, then I wear foundation by Chantecaille or Koh Gen Do. I try to go as green as I can with all makeup, but I still use Nars lipsticks in berry or red colors like Dragon Lady or Funny Face, and L'Oréal Mascara."
What are your favorite natural makeup removers, cleansers, and lotions?
"Marie Veronique All-Natural Cleanser, and sometimes I use an Arcona Brightening Peel. I love Crème de Rose by Simply Divine Botanicals. Out of all the natural lines I try out for my site, this line seems the most potent and powerful."
What about favorite green salons or spas?
"Natural hot springs in nature are my favorite spas, but I do like facials from Arcona Spa from time to time. Baths are really my spa time . . . and drinking a cup of tea in my garden. I've been using a natural Japanese bath salt called Sai Sei that smells like heaven! And I use a new line of incredible oils called African Botanics. Their Marula firming body oil and botanical body hydrator are great after the bath."
