Oct 4 2013 - 5:30am

Sideswept hair has long been considered the epitome of glamour on the red carpet, but now the look is getting a 21st-century upgrade with extreme side-parted styles. Stars like Coco Rocha and Rosario Dawson [1] have made their hairstyles semipermanent by shaving one or both sides. There's also the rocker-chic braided undercut seen on the likes of Kristen Stewart [2] and Jennifer Aniston [3]. Of course, the classic over-the-shoulder waves will never go out of fashion, but get some modern hair inspiration from these asymmetrical looks.

Upon first glance, you would think Malin Akerman had an appointment with the shears, but it's just a superstraight, slicked-back style.

Coco Rocha chopped off her strands for a look that is long on one side and nearly shaved on the other.

Even ladies with short hair can pull off the faux undercut look, just let Julianne Hough be your guide.

At the premiere of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, actress Leven Rambin wore a single french braid that went behind her ear.

Vanessa Lachey opted for a faux-undercut style at the Fox TCA party.

She created the look with two cornrows right above her ear.

The one-sided sweep is Kristen Stewart [4]'s signature hairstyle, but she added a braid on one side for an edgier feel.

Sienna Miller [5] pulled her tousled hair over to the right and secured the back with a few pins at the nape for the Met Gala. The headband was a nice touch that complemented her earrings.

Vampy lipstick and a couple diagonal cornrows took Scarlett Johansson [6]'s waved style from typical to noteworthy.

Cassie Ventura may have a sweet facade, but her look is pure punk with both sides of her hair shorn short.

Usually reserved when it comes to her hair, Jennifer Aniston [7] took her look to a new level with a chic braided undercut.

Pulling your hair off to the side is also an opportunity to show off stellar hair accessories like Brooklyn Decker's spiked barrette.

At the Kids' Choice Awards, Jessica Alba [8] slicked back her hair on one side for a sleek over-the-shoulder look.

Give your sideswept style two-textured appeal by adding gel at the roots and a chunky braid à la Cara Delevingne.

Of course we can't forget Rihanna [9]'s double-shaved look that she is steadily growing out, which she also recently dyed gray.

Whoever braided Chanel Iman's undercut for the Met Gala is truly talented, and the addition of pastel pink ends played perfectly into the theme of the night.

Model Alice Dellal was one of the early converts to the shaved sides trend, plus we love her brunette to blond ombré.

Transform your beach waves for a night out with a simple twist behind the ear as seen on Lea Michele [10].

Don't know what to do with your blowout on day two? Try Nina Dobrev [11]'s lopsided look.

Known for her unique style, Ke$ha wore a braided undercut that showed off her dark roots and rock-star style.

Go for a classic look like Amanda Seyfried [12]. Start off with an extreme side part, then twist a section of hair near the ear and pin back.

Rosario Dawson [13]'s buzzed sides are a touch longer than the norm, and are easily hidden with an opposite side part.

Khloé Kardashian has also tried out the faux-undercut trend, wearing a trio of braids offset by smooth waves.

Jessica Biel [14] wore an off-center chignon with a deep side part for a new take on an Old Hollywood favorite.

Jada Pinkett Smith [15] shaved off her sides for a look that is still surprisingly sophisticated.

The easiest way to take a sideswept style from glamorous to edgy is to add a braid. Liv Tyler [16]'s cornrow stretched from ear to nape.
