How to Have Flawless Skin, According to Fashion Week's Top Models

Feb 22 2015 - 12:00pm

If you're wearing as much makeup as the New York Fashion Week models [1], you're bound to have skin flare-ups — acne, dryness, the works. These gorgeous women are running from show to show, only to have their faces scrubbed and repolished again and again through the week (and, for some, the month!). To find out how they get made over so many times in a row and still manage to look perfect on the runway, we interviewed models backstage to find out what skin care steps they take [2] when they're back in their own bedrooms.

Anastasia Ivanova at ICB

We were instantly drawn to Anastasia's flaming red strands backstage at ICB (that is her natural hair color, by the way) and her flawless flair complexion. And guess what? Her skin care routine only requires four products. Anastasia cleanses nightly with Bioderma and moisturizes with Carmex lip balm [4] ($2) and Caudalíe Beauty Elixir [5] ($49).

But her Holy Grail product for Winter dryness is Nivea Creme [6] ($12) — the one in the blue jar. "It's like a memory from childhood. Surprisingly they are doing the same quality of product," Anastasia said. "Usually a cosmetic brand goes on top, then they are just selling the name, but Nivea still has really good products."

Mari Agory at Misha Nonoo

Apparently ageless skin like Mari's begins in the shower. After a shower or bath, the gorgeous model applies cocoa butter from head to toe while she is still wet. For her face, she uses a cleansing classic — Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash [7] ($9) to remove any makeup (her go-to beauty look is a bold matte lipstick). The only antiaging product in her bathroom cupboard is vitamin E oil from Trader Joe's. "My skin is naturally oily, and I like having that shine. When I feel a little dry, I use the vitamin E oil," she said.

Jeanne Cadieu at Kate Spade New York

Look at how glowy Jeanne's skin was for this photograph, and then imagine it 100 times more radiant to understand how perfect her skin is in real life. Jeanne's secret? Going bare — when it comes to cosmetics, that is. "I never wear makeup and never touch my skin," Jeanne explained. She also credits a healthy diet and extra hydration from Avène Skin Recovery Cream [8] ($32) as skin care musts.

Carmen Julia Durán at Kate Spade New York

Turns out the secret to model-level skin is on your local supermarket's shelf — Carmen uses almond milk to cleanse her face twice daily. "But everything comes from inside," she warned. "It's not just what you put on your skin." In other words, treat your body right and feed it good fuel, and you'll see a complexion as radiant as Carmen's.

Juana Burga at Tracy Reese

Unlike many models we spoke to backstage, who sheepishly admitted that "nothing" was their skin care secret (sigh!), Juana had lots of tips to share. Not only does she ascribe to the Korean method of double cleansing, but also, she is a fan of DIY [9] masks. "Bananas are really good for lifting your skin when you're tired," she shared. The morning after a rough night, eat a banana and reserve a small piece to mash up and apply to your face. "It can get a little disgusting because it turns brown," she admitted, but after 15 minutes, you'll see tighter, brighter skin. She also drinks lots of water and loves using Lucas' Papaw Ointment [10] ($16) in the Winter on her cuticles and lips.

Sabrina Ioffreda at Zimmermann

Like many of her model cohorts, Sabrina swears by Bioderma makeup remover and Avène moisturizer. To stave off dry Winter skin, she spritzes on rose water. Learn how to make your own rose water here [11].

Asia Matthews at Tracy Reese

When discussing products, the bubbly Asia wrinkled her nose at the mention of foundation. "I don't use it — it makes me feel itchy." The rest of her routine is pretty affordable: Asia applies Neutrogena Naturals Acne Spot Treatment [12] ($9) on any breakouts and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion [13] ($9) on her body.

Lera Tribel at Milly

Lera listed a number of top skin care brands that she keeps on her vanity: Shiseido face wash, Clinique moisturizer, and Clarins eye cream. Another favorite that she stores in her bag is L'Occitane Shea Butter Lip Balm [14] ($12), which Lera actually uses around her eyes to get rid of dark circles.

Twice a week before bed, Lera does a deep-hydrating mask with olive oil. "I put oil on around the eyes, too, because eyes are the most sensitive part of the skin," she says. "I keep it on one hour while I'm reading a book or watching TV or cooking."

Iana Godina at Milly

Like just about every other model walking the catwalk, Iana uses Bioderma to remove her makeup each night. But one up-and-coming brand she did introduce us to is Aesop. She uses the Australian line to cleanse and moisturize. Her favorite Winter remedy is the Aesop Madnarin Facial Hydrating Cream [15] ($49). In dire dry-skin emergencies, Iana breaks open a vitamin E capsule for an overnight oil treatment.

Kem Jaspers at Milly

For Kem, preparing for the runway begins with a Chanel Hydra Beauty Mask [16] ($50) to add moisture to her dry skin. And if any pimples pop up, she turns to her mom's classic advice — diaper cream. She uses the new-mom staple to dry up breakouts fast.

Georgie Badiel at Alice + Olivia

Georgie was hesitant to reveal that she uses Carmex to keep her pout moist, but we already know the benefits of a thick lip balm! The model also told us she relies on Neutrogena makeup remover and pure shea butter from L'Occitane to moisturize her face. For special occasions, like Fashion Week, Georgie uses Vbeaute Facial Exfoliator [17] ($24) to scrub her skin smooth.

Anne Peck at Alice + Olivia

German model Anne stocks up on Avene Cleanance Gel Soapless Cleanser [18] ($20) and Avene Clean-AC Hydrating Cream [19] ($13) for her everyday skin care routine. But her secret weapon for beautiful makeup is Kiehl's Midnight Oil [20] ($70). "I use it in the morning, not at night," she said. I put it under my makeup to make my skin really smooth so that the creams and concealers really blend in."

Juliette Fazekas at Lela Rose

Juliette is all about the French imports when it comes to skin care. She loves the Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser [21] ($28) and La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo [22] ($37) for pimples. But her American drugstore favorite is the Simple Micellar Water [23] ($23), which she puts on a cotton pad to remove all traces of runway makeup.

Brenda Kranz at Naeem Khan

We're shocked by the first thing that came out of Brenda's mouth: "I never use makeup remover," she said. Instead, she uses an organic cleansing lotion from German skin care brand Beate Johnen [24] to take off cosmetics. She rinses her sensitive skin with ice-cold water and dries her face with a microfiber towel. When we asked about acne, Brenda revealed she doesn't get pimples (because of course).

Lily Zhi at Naeem Khan

We caught Lily trying to get a coffee boost near craft services backstage, and she revealed that she uses all Asian brands. Every night she applies her Shiseido cloth mask [25] ($63) to hydrate her dry skin after she rinses away makeup with the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil [26] ($90).
