Get the Skin of a Stella McCartney Model Without Spending Hours at the Sink

Jan 23 2016 - 11:00am

Stella McCartney presented her Autumn 2016 collection [1] in LA just last week, and if we had to sum up the vibe of the night in one word, it would be youthful. Before the stars — Gwyneth! Johnny! Mary J! [2] — arrived at Hollywood's historic Amoeba Music record store, we went backstage with skin care brand Sunday Riley to see how they achieved the models' effervescent, megabright skin.

Considering that many of us have spent the last few months hibernating in the dry, artificial heat of our homes and offices, all while indulging in a holiday diet that consists primarily of booze and sugar cookies, "fresh" and "plump" might not be the first words that come to mind when we see our faces in the mirror. But, it turns out, the glowing visages we saw at Stella are within reach. They weren't the work of a crazy arsenal of products or hours spent at the sink. Instead, the dewy, healthy faces were achieved with five products over the course of about 10 minutes.

"It's all about that really natural, glowing, refreshed skin," Sunday Riley Account Executive Ryan Nelson told us. "When you're cleansed, hydrated, and exfoliated properly, your foundation is just going to glide on so much easier, and when it doesn't have anything blocking it from your skin, it won't fall off as easily." The secret weapon backstage was Sunday Riley's yet-to-be-released Tidal moisturizer, a blue, faintly herbal-smelling cream that goes on rich but disappears just as quickly as 2015 did. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait to stock our medicine cabinet with our own jar until March 4, when it hits shelves.

In the meantime, though, Nelson gave us a four-step regimen that basically works like CPR on skin that's flatlined after a tough Winter. While we can't promise that a modeling agency will sign you after following it, you'll at least look and feel revived.

1: Start With a Cleansing Balm

Get the grime off with an emulsifying cleanser like Sunday Riley Blue Moon Tranquility Cleansing Balm [3] ($50). Products like this not only give your skin a clean sweep, getting rid of any leftover makeup, but leave a nice, hydrating layer that still feels clean.

2: Give Yourself a Flash Facial

Do a little chemistry and mix up two products: two to three pumps of Sunday Riley's Good Genes Treatment [4] ($105) and one pump of Sunday Riley's Good Genes Treatment [5] ($45). Leave it on for 5-10 minutes, then remove with a warm washcloth. Nelson says the lactic acid in Good Genes works "like Scrubbing Bubbles for the face" while the clay in Ceramic Slip Cleanser helps detox and minimize pores.

3: Slick On a Little Oil

Don't be afraid to use a light touch with a night oil during the day, especially during the Winter. Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Night Oil [6] ($105) contains essential oils that calm inflammation and redness while locking in some added moisture.

4: Use a Moisturizer Pumped With Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is the skin care ingredient you keep hearing about for a reason. Dermatologists have long known about its hydrating powers, and there's new evidence that it might stimulate collagen production, which is key to plumping the skin and filling out fine lines. Sunday Riley's Tidal contains two types of the ingredient, along with illuminating pearl powder and papaya enzymes for gentle exfoliation.

You're All Set!

Afterward, complement your newly invigorated mug with the makeup look MAC artist John Stapleton gave Stella's models: boyish, brushed-up brows, stylishly clumped top lashes, and a light smear of foundation blended outward from the center of the face. "The skin already looks so beautiful and hydrated," he said. "It's just really spot concealing with a raw, natural finish."
